Question Unlocking 8800c to work on Verizon... will this work? - 07-29-2007, 06:47 PM

Hey guys, I am trying to unlock my Cingular 8800 to work on the Verizon Blackberry network. Is this possible?

I got the unlock code from Cingular and am confused as to how to use it to unlock the phone... their directions were terrible. So any help with this would be great too!

Just wanted to make sure that this phone is compatible with the verizon network. I heard that one is GSM and the other is CDMA... so don't know if this conflicts.

Thanks!
Andrew

Wirelessly posted (BlackBerry8300/4.2.2 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.1 VendorID/125)

That is correct. Cingular use GSM technology while Verizon use CDMA. Both technologies are not compatible as a GSM phone uses a sim card to tell it what network to operate on.

I'm curious to know what instructions they sent you. This is what they sent me which was very clear:

1 Insert Cingular SIM into device
2 Power phone on and Turn off the radio (Turn Wireless Off option) VERY IMPORTANT.
3 Select "Options"
4 Scroll down and select "SIM Card"
5 Type "MEPD"
6 Type "MEP2"
7 Enter the Unlock Code
8 Press enter
9 Reboot device. Device is now unlocked.

The above will unlock the device quite nicely. However, you can't use your Cingular BB on the Verizon network. As you stated, one is GSM (Cingular) and the other is CDMA (Verizon) and they are NOT compatible.

How do you get an unlock code? Is it the same code for every phone or is it specific to your phone?

You can get it from your carrier (If it's their phone and your account is in good standing, usually for 90 days) or, if you can't get it from them, you can purchase an unlock code from a 3rd party unlocking service.
