I got the "Error reading setup initialization file" message. Redownloaded the file from the Smithmicro site and it worked. Try grabbing the updater again...

Are you using the latest version of BB Desktop Software for VZW: "BlackBerry Desktop Software v4.2 (updated 5-31-2007)" available here?

Default Another Sucessful Upgrade - 08-03-2007, 08:22 PM

It took a total of about 40 minutes from start of download to completion. No issues but I noticed it took awhile for the final initiation. Only outward change I see or notice is the before mentioned change in option menu font. All data and settings appear the same and the songs and videos on the media card do not appear to be corrupted. So will report if anything is found that is not first noted by someone else.

The software is for the 8830, not the 8703.
Do you have an 8830?

My backlighting appears to be different. Almost like they turned down the brightness a bit. I can read it better straight on without tilting. Might just be me...

I don't know what it is, the difference is but the keyboard does look a bit different at night. In the list of changes it says something about the ringer. I can't tell any difference. Still not loud enough.

Same message here. I am running Vista.

Can someone confirm the download size. Mine is 70.0 MB (73,436,200 bytes). I am concerned with the install failing because of premature download.

The complete list:

GSM to CDMA Reconnect
While in GSM mode, if device or radio is powered down with no coverage or left on during flight back to US, device will notreestablish data connectivity in CDMA coverage until battery is removed and reinserted.

Call Collision
User is making a voice call, incoming call comes in (call waiting). User ends first call and answers 2nd call. User then ends 2nd call. Tries to make outgoing call and can't because device thinks it is still on a call

System Determination (GSM Mode)
Multiple issues (SOS, Reject code) resolved with acquiring network connectivity while in GSM.

Calendar Sync Issues
Three issues previously identified have been resolved with this firmware update. Customers with the original device firmware load can also download the calendar patch OTA from BlackBerry

Ringer Volume
A 6dB boost has been introduced to audio notifications while the device is holstered.

Keypad Backlighting
Based upon customer feedback, keypad backlighting will not engage in low-to-medium lighting conditions which will improve usability.

CDMA Radio Fixes
Corrected SIP fallback issue experienced in some markets resulting in Error 348 on the handheld device.

Unlocked SIM Functionality
The device can now be unlocked to support the use of non-VZW SIMsfor voice and data service on GSM/GPRS networks.
Note: Customers using third-party SIMsare not supported by VZW while roaming on GSM/GPRS networks.
All BlackBerry 8830 World Edition Smartphonesare SIM locked, which means that the phones are programmed to operate in GSM mode only with a Verizon Wireless SIM card.
In order for a BlackBerry 8830 to operate in GSM mode using another carrier's SIM card, a special code must be entered into the phone.
Each phone has a unique code, which can be provided by the Global Support Team (908-559-4899).
If the customer request his/her 8830 to be SIM unlocked, representatives must contact the Global Support Team to provide the unlock code.
Note: Customer must be in good standing for at least 60-days.

Added Stereo Bluetooth Support
Device now supports A2DP and AVRCP Bluetooth profiles which adds compatibility with stereo Bluetooth headsets

The CDMA Radio works much better. Here is what I have noticed:

Better performance in Weak Signal Areas.
Seems to "search for network" much faster
Signal Level indicator use to bounce from 5 bars to 1 bar several times a minute. (FIXED)

Anyone know what is causing the "error reading setup initialization file" message?? I have downloaded the file numerous times from vzw and still no luck running the program.
