Default Blackberry 8830 Uncaught Exception - 08-09-2007, 11:31 AM

Hey,
I'm praying there's a solution to this other than reloading the OS. That seems to be what everyone suggests first. I'm setting up another 8830 Blackberry for a user. We had to wipe and reload the OS as to setup a blue tooth smart card reader with the device. this installs the S/MIME software plus I got the latest software from verizon. Now, everytime the user tries to open the maps the following error pops up. Uncaught Exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

I tried popping the battery out with no luck. It is a pretty big pain getting the smartcard stuff setup right so if avoidable I really dont want to wipe this thing again. I know the softwares and versions are compatible because my blackberry and another coworkers blackberries that have or have had the same blue tooth cac readers still work with the maps.

Anyone have any ideas???

Thanks.

Brad

I don't think this is address book related. I just called the user and had him open up some contacts in the address book and they all opened up fine. Is there anyway to reinstall the java application on the blackberry without reinstalling all of the core files? Just a thought.

Just a note, everything else ive tried on his device works. webbrowser and all.

Thanks.

we've figured out whats causing the problem. I downloaded the latest verizon software the other day. I have replicated this on another 8830 and its definately that version software. i am testing this on my own 8830 as opposed to the users at this time due to the hastle its been. i am on v4.2.2.148 ( Platform 3.0.0.67) with cryptographic kernel v3.8.4.47

another 8830 in our group used the older software off of the cd ( i dont rememeber the version. It had an older version but a newer platform number. I don't really understand that, but all the same.

The error itself occurs after I pair the blue tooth cac reader to the device. as soon as i do that i get the error on the maps. As soon as I unpair the blue tooth device, the maps go back to working.

Does anyone have any knowledge of verizon having a solution for this?

i have work orders in with verizon and rim. rim told me they would respond within 48 hours and this issue was sent up to their software engineers... its been over a month. each time i call them I am told that they are still working the issue. I guess this is something that will remain broken until there is a new version of software released. anyone else encountered anything similar?

Thanks.

Brad

So how are you going to get around the CAC issue?? Once it's mandated you will need your CAC card reader to decrypt email. I have the exact same issue as you.......

Are you using the BlackBerry Smart Card reader? Or are you using something else?

I am getting the message Uncaught exception:java.lang.NullPointer Exception on my new Blackberry Pearl. Then, a list shows up with Address Book, Alarm, Camera, etc. and in any attempt to click on those items, an "uncaught exception error starting net_rim_bb_..." shows up. What do I do? Do I have to replace the entire phone and the information stored on it?

Thank god someone else is dealing with this. I actually get a different error code that reads something like "100 > = 5" and lose all address book functionality. I have worked with both Verizon and RIM. They were both useless. I really need to get this figured out! I am ready to turn in my phone and walk away.
