my 8830's keyboard feels sticky...help please -
08-20-2007, 01:49 PM
so i spilled some beer on my 8830 this weekend. the phone seems to be working totally fine, but the keys sound a little sticky when i touch them (they don't seem to be sticking down, just sounds like something [probably dry beer] is in there). is there any safe way for me to try to clean this out? thanks a lot.

If it was still wet, I would say remove the battery and rinse it with clean water and let it dry a couple days. However, now that it's dried, you may have more trouble cleaning it. It dries inside the keyboard contacts as well as the keypad itself. You could probably clean the keypad (plastic buttons) but they keyboard (electrical portion) may never be the same again.

Iso alcohol and very meticulous cleaning. The 'stick' will last for a while, if it ever goes away. Best bet, call your carrier and say that your phone drops calls a lot (common on the 8830 from what I have noticed).

thanks guys. i'm still within 30 days of buying the phone, so i can figure out some other minor reason to tell the people at verizon so that they will swap it out.

Yep, and hope they don't look at the moisture indicator upon return. If the beer made it that far.

if the moisture indicator is the square in the top left corner behind the battery (on my past phones it has been a dot), then it is still white. plus, i already got a second phone after my initial one seemed to have a battery issue, and i did it through customer service at the store, not tech support, and they never even really looked at the phone.

yep, then we're all good. i have a feeling that using the keys some more will loosen up this sticky sound, but it might be best to figure out a reason for a swap out. any ideas?

Maybe common on Verizon, but I've had my Sprint 8830 for over a month now and it hasn't dropped one call.

i would not go with the droped calls, they can check droped calls, i tried it once, best is to just tell me the phone locks up, you pulled the battery and when it turned on the screen pixalated and stayed like that all day while you were at work.
verizon is funny, they can tell how many droped calls their towers have.

I have had great experience with Verizon swapping phones out with no hassle whatsoever. If the phone is otherwise clean, bring it in, show it to them and say 'does this keyboard feel right to you?' Odds are the rep will swap the phone without question, particularly since you are within the 1st 30 days. I've been told that within the first 30 they are told to do whatever it takes to make you happy. Best part... You aren't lying, unless you count 'omission' as lying. Lol

Mine has yet to drop a call .. Best Call Quality that I have experienced on a smart phone .. I love this thing, I wish I would have picked up a Blackberry much sooner. This is a great device

Just an FYI - I dropped my phone in a mug of beer once... Take the battery out immediately and you can find a liquid electronic cleaner (alcohol based). It's compressed. When you spray it, it's liquid. It is non conductive (which is why water shouldn't be used) so what I did was spray the hell out of the phone. Absolutely soak it in this stuff. Then take an air compressor with a fine tip on the hose and put the 50-70psi air to the phone. It will blow all the liquid out. Do this multiple times to clean out any conductive material you have left.

thanks again.

You "should" be able to swap again. I wouldn't volunteer the other info, although they can likely see that in the computer.
