I'm thinking about trying out this tethering thing, but have one question before I call Verizon to take the leap...

Can anyone foresee any problems with me tethering to a different PC than the one I sync with?

I sync with my desktop Mac, which I obviously don't need a tethered modem for. When I travel, I use a WinXP laptop. That's the one I'd like to tether with.

Anything I should look out for in trying this?

No you should not have a problem as long as you have the proper drivers on the computer. I tether with two different computers.

Thanks. Do I still install the CD they sent, or will I be taking shortcuts to avoid having all the syncing stuff on there? Since I'm syncing with a Mac, I haven't even taken the CD out of the box.

You will want to install the VZAccess Manager software, located on a separate disc than the Blackberry User Tools, which is where the Desktop Sync software is located. I sync 3 computers and tether my laptop which is one of the sync'd units. It works well, although it is certainly slower than a data card. Much cheaper though, and works in a pinch.

Hmmm... Just realized you are a Mac user... I use Windows XP and I don't think the same software apps apply. Possibly Verizon has the same utility for mac?

No, your info sounds good. I sync with my Mac, but I want to tether to my Windows machine.

Gotcha... (Just re-read your orig post) The tethering software that comes with the BB works great. No problem sync'ing with multiple pc's either, but a word of advise... If you want all of your contacts, calendars ect to be the same, sync a perfect copy to your BB and before you sync the next PC make sure you start with a clean copy of outlook, otherwise you will likely have duplicates and, in my case, lots of them! Once every PC has been sync'd with the new BB any updates made on either PC or the BB will sync flawlessly!

I want the same but the opposite. Synch with Mac, and not thru BT. Is there a 3rd party solution yet for the Mac via usb cable?

Not being Apple savy and having no idea what compatability issues are likely to arise, I will have to defer to the "mac-sperts"

Sync or tether? I sync with my Mac via USB using Missing Sync. So far, so good.

I use PocketMac Sync manager for the mac .. It's free and it works (will also let you back up you data to .mac) ... I have read lot's of negative comments about this software, but I have found it to work solid for me.

Yeah, I read a lot of negative stuff about it too. Enough that it scared me away. That, combined with the good experience I had with Missing Sync for Palm.

I have to say that it in my experience the hardware and software seems to have come such a long way. My bb7100i was a nightmare sync'ing with the old desktop manager and here we are a year later and the new setup works perfectly. Absolute plug-n-play versus the old 'mess around with it for days until you could get it to work marginally well' method. I would certainly give it a shot. Worse case, back up the bb and restore it/delete the software from your mac if its a total nightmare.
