Cool Verizon Wireless BlackBerry Loses Data Connectivity 1X - 02-09-2008, 03:20 PM

I have also experienced this problem with the BlackBerry 8830 World Edition from Verizon Wireless.

My first (I am now on number 3) lost data connectivity completely and it could not be restored. I worked with Verizon Wireless technical support - we removed the battery and wiped the handheld with no success. 1X would not appear – only 1x.

My second lost data connectivity intermittently during the day. A power reset would restore connectivity. The problem is unless you’re constantly looking for loss of signal, you don’t realize that you’re not receiving data.

Let’s hope that the third time's the charm…

I had an accident with my 8830 the other week and had to get a new 8830. I am on sprint and I noticed when it started it up it has a new splash screen that sasys something like "sprint speed" (in yellow letter with a black background). Says its version 4.2.2.176 platform 3.0.0.76. And I can report that I have not had the annoying loss of data yet, and I would have it almost daily on my other 8830, and in the past few weeks I have been downloading a lot of junk to get it back all the stuff my old 8830 had and not a single disconnect.

So judging by a poll I made about the people who have the issue and dont have it, it could be possible that in the end its a hardware issue, unless that software version I posted above for Sprint is different than whats on the site for download (I am almost 99% positive they are the same)

4.2.2.176 is the current release for Sprint. I have that one. I do have the connection losses frequently myself.

I dont know if 4.5 will fix the issue as I have not seen RIM even acknowledge the problem!

There's a sprint employee on the BAW forums who recently (2/5/09) posted this:

Quote:
Sprint and RIM have isolated this issue to some bad code in the phone. RIM is releasing a patch for testing by Sprint this week. Once tested it will be out to the public. I am not sure of all the details yet, but this will be fixed soon. I would expect the patch in the next week or 2. Once it is released I will post the info on how to get it.
Take it with a grain of salt... believe it if you will (I'm cautiously optimistic. ).

I wonder if this will help us verizonites with the same issue.

I doubt it.. Us sprint folks are a little butt hurt since some verizon user stated verizon was superior and didnt have this issue and it was sprints network. But thankfully us sprint folks are quick to forgive and forget... So I am sure if its a phone software issue a fix will come for verizon, but after the sprint fix comes out you might want to call up verizon and let them know that hey sprint got the issue fixed.. I still remember back to my days with the treo when enough sprint customers complained we got the patch first and verizon took forever to get a patch out, but it ended up being better for verizon folks since the update from Palm bricked most of our phones and was pulled quickly.

Nothing yet.

I will add, though, that since the "BB lags" that myself and some others noticed about a week and a half ago, my BB has been a lot more stable. At least at my house. We won't talk about the troubles it gave me this weekend when I was out in the sticks.

I'm finding this very interesting, because I hardly ever have data-network-loss issues on my 8830; however, I have people tell me often that my phone goes straight to voicemail when they call, and that sometimes, they can't leave a message when this happens. OUCH! I've even tested this with calling from home, and maybe 20% of those calls went straight to voicemail. I've had 5 bars on my reception meter at all times. WTF? I loathe dealing with Verizon reps at their stores. Most of them are poorly trained and don't have a clue how to troubleshoot phones. I'm concerned about my problem here, but it seems to be happening on a very minimal basis, so I haven't really pursued a fix to this yet. I expect more from a Blackberry, though, since they are supposedly the "workhorse" of email, etc. I find it inexcusable that they could be great with email and so-so with phone. They should be a communication workhorse, not just a written communication workhorse...

Default Same problem... - 05-12-2008, 11:54 PM

Hey all,

I'm having the same problem and it just started in the last few days. I am randomly losing data connection . . . I'll pick up my phone and it displays GSM. I found if I turn off my wireless connection and turn it back on it will usually come back.

It's not a major inconvenience but it is REALLY annoying. I'm actually beginning to wonder if my new wireless modem is intefering somehow because it seems to be happening mostly at home.

Anyway that's all I got.

Scott
