I am switching from an 8703e to an 8830 and need to upgrade/update my Desktop Manager. I have third party apps (e.g.- Cryptmagic) loaded which syncs when I connect my BB to DM.

Do I just install the new DM over the existing DM installation or do I need to uninstall the current DM and then install the new DM?

Also, if I do a backup of my 8703e, can I then load it onto my 8830 so I do not lose my Saved messages.

I realize I must install my third party apps again.

not sure if this is a complete answer, but I installed the new desktop manager and now there is an 'upgrade device' wizard, which backs up your old device and then xferrs data and apps to your new device (and some settings too). for some reason it didn't xfer all of my third party apps, but many of them. also xferred messages, call log (I think), phone book, etc. a really good tool IMO. made life MUCH easier.
