The spell checker was a great upgrade for me. We will play with the WiFi when we got home tonight!

The keyboard actually IS nicer feeling with a real click when each key is pressed. Even teh trackball seems to have "some" tactile feedback.

Did they make the headphone jack the standard 3.5mm this time?

Angry Darn PTT, I hate you! - 09-21-2007, 03:55 PM

Looks the same to me but I don't use the headphone jack.

I really hate that I can not go to the application list and delete the PTT thing. I got rid of it on my 8700 but forgot how I did it! Why can't they just allow you to delete the damn thing? Is it because you could change your mind and they could make some money if you activate it?

to get rid of PTT do this (what i do)

copy your platform.alx somewhere as a backup

search through platform.alx and look for something like "pttapp" or "ptt" and somewhere at the end of that line it says vendor 102. change 102 to 220 and then connect your berry and then it will remove the ptt....at least this is how ive done it several times on my curve....there are docs on here on how to do it...you can also use javaloader ive heard.

Thanks everyone. I will go and check it out!

You should see how fast the little send/receive arrows in the upper right corner move when on WiFi! They are like blurring!

Brings up my Weather Underground moving NexRad weather map in just a few seconds now! This is going to be a little more handy than I thought!

I caved and just ordered it online. Figured I'd save myself the heartache of trying to get one of my local stores to sell me one. Hopefully, it'll be here Mon or Tues!

How is the earpiece volume while on a call?

If your wifi network is encrypted how does it work? In addition can you have numerous wifi connections?

Volume is just the same as the 8800, very good for me.

My network is not but if it were you could put the encryption code in it and your are up and running.

Yes you can save connection settings and log on quickly at each different place.

It works well, they did a good job with the software.

Has anyone used the PTT on the 8800 series or even the 8820? How well does it work?

Default New 8820 Setup - 09-21-2007, 10:15 PM

Just picked up my new 8820 tonight. I'm still setting it up. Two things, even though I have changed the settings online at BIS, I still don't get my email. I was on BES before. Is there something that I have to do with the service books? My calendar hasn't synched with my outlook desktop yet either. Also, I would like to setup the convenience key (or any key) to turn on/turn off Bluetooth. When I tried to change the convenience key, it seems that the only option was to "Setup Bluetooth." I was able to configure a button to turn bluetooth on and off on my 7130c. Is there any way to do that on the 8820?

I'm thinking about grabbing one tomorrow! Only one of the local stores in my area has them in stock, figures it's one of the newer stores where I don't have a connect! Anyway they told me they have plenty and that it'll run me $499 plus tax to but it outright,
OUCH!!! I don't know if I can justify spending that much on basically an 8800 with wifi,
especially with the Tilt release right around the corner.

We'll just have to see tomorrow when I walk into the store and play around with it!
Ohh the pressure of new toys..

I set the convenience key to 'Manage Connections'. Then when I hit the key I can turn on/off Mobile Network, WiFi or Bluetooth. Not exactly what you want but its the closest I can think of.

Sorry, no idea about you email problem.

I am also playing tonight with my new 8820...

Does WI FI help the XM radio application? or does it work only with the cell connection?

Overall, I am happy with it.

Actually, that's a real good idea. Then I can manage WiFi and Bluetooth. There's an extra step, but, not too bad! I found out that I have to have my IT guy setup my PIN and IMEI in our BlackBerry Enterprise Server. Then he has to give me the password and I have to go through Enterprise Activation on the device. Since it's the weekend, I'll probably have to wait until Monday.

I need to see and track the weather for my company as we do some exterior painting. I use a site called WeatherUnderground. On my 8800 it would take 30+ seconds to get a full motion NexRad color radar map showing local storms and the direction the were heading in Jacksonville. The device on WiFi on takes seconds! Those little up down arrows never moved so fast on the 8800. They are a blur on the 8820!

Excellent, thats good to hear. I guess that goes to show how powerful the processor is in these black berries.

Usually the biggest thing limiting the speed on data transfers when dealing with cellphones is the processor itself, not so much the cellular network.

Are these screenshots (BGR article) pretty much the same as you're seeing on the 8820? Just curious about the wifi info and such.

The 8800 and 8820 use the same processor. Downloading on the 8820 via WiFi is VERY MUCH FASTER than a typical EDGE download. The difference is the thruput of the WIFi compared to the EDGE and not the processor.

Someone correct me if I am wrong.

You have something wrong. Either your WiFi network needs work or your phone needs replacement as there is simply no comparison in the two.

man, what a pain replacing phone as an experiment. i upgraded to a new linksys megabits N model and i am pretty convinced (from speed tests on company wifi laptops) that my home wi-fi network is fine. guess need to test also with a zippy visitor lan at office. if i get 70s/80s there too maybe will be worth effort.time of trying to replace bberry phone. ugh/thx

if i may, let me provide a quick follow up. i have double checked my home wifi network and found it good both with current latest/greatest linksys megabits n router and backup earlier linksys version (with upgraded firmware). i am holding after getting escalated from at&t customer support. for the particular profile involved, i clicked Wi-Fi Diagnostics. some stats i see:

Current profile: [mine]
SSID: [mine]
AP MAC Address: [mine]
Security Type: WEP
Local IP Address: [mine]
Signal Level: 0 dBM [weird, company laptops show "excellent"]
Connection Data Rate: 54 Mbps
Status: Network acquired
VPN: some confusing stuff, end of which has red x next to Authentication (i don't use VPN for the blackberry). later: Error: VPN profile is not found

BlackBerry Infrastructure
Connecting: green check
Authentication: green check
Authenticating server: green check

Enterprise server (red x right of "Connecting," black dots next to "Authenticating router" and "Authenticating server"

maybe greggebhardt was correct and i need new phone. i wish i were smart enough to diagnose. will report if i get answer
