Default Can I make a phone call through my wifi?

Please Login to Remove!

I have an 8900 and T-Mobile but I get VERY spotty service in my house. I'm wondering if it's possible to make a phone call thru my wireless network? If so, can someone point me in the right direction? I tried a search but my syntax may not have been clear because it returned nothing.

T-Mobile's 8900 supports "UMA" - which is calling over WiFi.

If your 8900 is correctly connected to your home wireless router, then the letters EDGE should be replaced by UMA.

Hope that helps!

So when it says "UMA" on my phone, the call is being made thru my wifi? I never realized that, as it says that all the time, lol. Are calls made through the wifi free? IE, if I wanted to call another country, or long distance?

Calls to other countries are not free. Depending on your phone plan, your domestic calls made via UMA may not impact th minutes in your plan. When UMA first came out, there were a bunch of threads about plans, charges and UMA.

Unless you have the TMO@Home $10 add-on, all calls made through WiFi will use plan minutes. With TMO@Home, you have unlimited Nationwide calling via WiFi. However, calling another country will cost you international long distance rates with or without TMO@Home. (There is supposed to be a discounted international rate option with TMO@Home as well but I don't know what the rates are nor do I find them on TMO's website.)

Actually you do not have to pay the extra $10 for calling from home using WiFi.

UMA or WiFi calling works 2 ways;
First for reception purposes, you can use WiFi calling but will use your plan mins if you do NOT have the $10 add-on.

Second, for reception & unlimited calling if you add the $10 option and that works for an entire family plan so if you had 5 phones on one plan you would only have to pay the $10 once and all 5 phones can utilize the WiFi calling.

note that the WiFi calling / UMA option & free calling is based on call origination, meaning that if you initiated a call on WiFi (assuming you had the $10 add on) and left your house your call should hand over to the GSM network and you could continue that call on the cell towers and not use your plan mins.
