Angry unable to read/open email

I got my 9300 the other week or so and i was running great up until some point last night when it appears to have had some issue, because this morning when I took it off charge there was an error message on the screen.

The error was net_rim_bb_messenging_app(209), I can send and recieve SMS messages, but I cannot open emails, the phone just hangs for a minute or two then the trackball and buttons work again as though i never tried to open the message; I can also open the screen to create a new message but then I cannot get out of the new email message screen without pulling the battery or selecting discard.

If I pull the battery, upon startup I get the following error:
Uncaught exception: java.lang.NullPointerException

I figured I will need to reinstall the OS, but I do not appear to be able to perform a backup of my contacts and applications, so before I go for broke and lose everything I wanted to make sure that there is not a simple fix.

I tried removing and then reinstalling all of the language files, and have removed all of the IM and BlackBerry Messanger chat apps thinking that it was that which was having the problem - obviously I was wrong.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.
