Default Turn Off Camera Shutter - 07-04-2009, 06:09 AM

I was curious, how to turn off the sound of the camera shutter, even when the phone is on silent? I can't seem to find this option, even in the camera options.

Thanks for the help

You can't. I think there is an aftermarket program in the forums, you will have to search a little.

I read somewhere that its illegal to mute the camera shutter, something about taking pictures up people's skirts without them knowing.

I have heard that and I think it only applies to camera phones, as you can hold up a camera phone in a position that looks like you are just reading something/texting etc and can take pics
whereas if you hold up a camera its ALOT more obvious!

It's coming. It's called the Camera Phone Predator Alert Act (H.R. 414).

If you Google "Cell Phone Camera Sound Law", you'll find lots of articles on the new proposed law.

Yeah, but that is an act that is "coming". Blackberry has always had that shutter noise ever since they started putting cameras on their phones. So they didn't make it so you can disable the noise because it is illegal. It's not, and I can't see why people keep saying it is. That act is coming because right now .... Turning off shutter noise is legal and always has been.

No one is disputing that, but once the law comes in, RIM will make their updates in accordance with the law. I hate the sound personally. Even turn off the sound on my digital camera.

cameramuteapp
http://mobileutil.com/applications/download/5/

It's the easiest, and it does work. The other apps don't mute the sound, it just turns it way the heck down, but in a quiet room you can still hear it.
cameramuteapp really does turn the shutter sound completely off. And it's free.

I tried one too that just turned it down and that sucked. I'll try cameramuteapp when I get back to the states.

And or the guy that said 'Once the law is made' is that really the society we live in now? We all think the amount of laws are ridiculous but rather than do anything about it when a new law is talked about we speak of it as if it already exists rather than do anything about it? No wonder this country is going down the crapper.

Works like a charm, awesome app. I'm sure my Samsung and Nokia was able to mute the sound of the shutter with stock settings. Odd RIM doesn't allow that, I believe it's only Illegal in Japan where that sort of thing runs rampant.

This is going to sound wrong, so please know that.
How is that possible? Are apps that control a hardware function really dictated by the carrier?

When you install it doesn't automatically shut off the shutter noise. You have to click ment then go to mute ! But it mutes the entire blackberry including the camera shutter so ringtones don't work either. At least, this is how it works in my blackberry.

Oh, see, that actually makes sense to me then. I suppose you are dealing with different hardware, even cursorily at that point.
Thanks!

Boy that sure is a lame excuse everyone uses for why they want the sound off. Saying that they missed a good picture cause the sound scared an animal away. Well the sound is not there until after the picture is already committed to the camera so even if the animal ran after the sound then you have the pic anyway. Most people just want the sound off cause it actually annoys them or they are looking to take a sneak pic of that hot guy or gal in the airport, mall or where ever.

AHHH after 3 years, there is finally an app for this. thank you!

by the way

I live in los angeles, if i see a douchebag old man wearing an ed hardy shirt or an affliction shirt, they are getting their picture taken whether they like it or not. Their stupidity needs to be shown all over the internet. I dont need an excuse, im saying exactly what Im using it for.

cameramuteapp works great, but the mute option does not stay as a menu item after the phone is reset. you need to re-add it each time.

That's dumb. I'm not a pervert, I'm a married man. My primary reason is sometimes I'm out and about and someone looks like a complete jackass and I want to capture the moment to share with my internet budz for the lolz but I don't want to incite a brawl when the shutter sound goes off and they want to know why I took their picture and I tell them because they look like a jacktard.

My way of taking pics of chicks' asses is to make a phone call to my voicemail, and using the camera while the call is in place. There won't be any sound.
