I'm planning to purchase a Curve 8900 and I found that I can get a locked phone for about $50 cheaper than if I purchase an unlocked phone. I've watched a couple videos on the unlocking process and it seems super simple. I just don't want to pay someone for a code if I can get it for free.

I believe AT&T will provide unlocking codes however there are conditions that have to be met first. Such as, you must be a customer for 90-120 days. More discussion on the topic on the AT&T forum at howardforums.com.

If your account is in good standing, your carrier may unlock your device. Polices on this vary form carrier to carrier.
