Woken up this morning, taken my 8900 off charge, and just gone to use it as per normal.

Evertything is fine within the screen, the clock was still moving whilst on charge, but now the trackball isn't working to move the icons on the screen, and they keboard is failing to work either.

Same goes for the softkeys.

After around 5 seconds the screen turns off, and only comes back to life once i plug the phone back on charge.

What on earth as happened, and how can I fix this?

Tried taking the battery out, but the problem still persists!

Have you tried a boot up in safe mode? Turn handset off hold red power key until the handset starts up and you see the operator logo pop up.

Or I would advise wipe and reinstall os.

Has the handset come into contact with water at all. Usually keyboard issues are caused by this.

Same problem here - keyboard doesn't work, nor does the 'clicking' of the trackball. Scroll works after a short delay though.
I reloaded the software and no difference. I'm off to buy a box of rice!

I am experiencing the same problem as well (aleator - excellent description!) over the last two days.

I have read somewhere about the moist issue and indeed I was on a beach during a very warm and humid day when it all started. So after reading elsewhere about the rice box, I got one yesterday night, but so far it didn’t help…

I am wondering if I should keep it in for longer or simply call my operator’s insurance to replace it. Any advice?

After 3 days in a bag of rice, still no improvement. I've also disassembled the phone a few times to examine all the connections, but was unable to find anything that looked like it could be the problem.
I think this issue was caused by talking on the phone near the pool on a very hot day - some perspiration from my face dripped down into the phone. I worry this could be another drawback to the 'loose' keyboard - it's easy for water/moisture to flow down into the phone.
I would recommend going through the insurance. RIM clearly has an issue here.
