Default New Owner (No Data Plans) Questions

This is my first post on here, yesterday I received my new BB Curve 8900 from T-Mobile. I spent a while playing with the phone yesterday and of course I have some questions.

I opted not to get T-Mobile's data plan for two reasons. One, I don't have many friends with BB so I would not have many people to BBM. Second, I don't have much of a need for email/internet while I'm on the go. For me, the cost of the data plan does not seem reasonable.

That being said, is it possible to access one's email without the data plan (using wifi)? I know I can't 'BB Push' and that's not a problem, but on my old phone (Nokia E71) I could just set up the phone with my email accounts and access them using the Wi-Fi connection at school or at home. I was able to get the BB Browser to access my home wi-fi so I could go on websites, but no luck with email. I guess I could use the email by logging into my school's website or AOL/GMail.com but seems very incovenient. Is there some way to do this, or maybe there is an App which I could use to get email via Wi-Fi?

I have read many posts on here talking about how the BB is 'crippled' without the data plan, but honestly I don't know if a few hundred dollars extra per year is justifiable.

Thank you!
