i wanted to ask if there is any alternate way of backing up contacts other that the desktop manager (to which my device connects but i the restore/backup/sync options are greyed out) and if putting ion new firmware will delete my contacts

Google contact sync and Google calendar sync. You can also sync with Google directly using BIS.

You need a BB dataplan. Do you have that?
