There are 3 classes of users that usually get devices ahead of everyone else (regardless of the readiness of the device for the masses):

1. The celebrity -- These are pure marketing arrangements. Celebrity carries a device with him/her in exchange for being the first person in the world to have one. They understand the device may not be ready for prime-time, and contractually they cannot say anything negative about the product as part of the arrangement. Chances are the celebrity will ditch their device in a few days or weeks (either stuffed in a drawer along with the rest of their free swag, or placed up for charity auction).

2. The media -- these are the A-list bloggers, journalists, etc. that upon receiving an evaluation unit will analyze the device to death. Companies are very careful about releasing their products too early to this crowd, because a negative review (even ones where the journalist is clear that they are reviewing a pre-production unit) can be enough to make or break a product launch.

3. The engineer -- As part of carrier acceptance procedures, and field testing, there are typically dozens of engineering samples floating around. These devices may occasionally also filter through to regional sales reps to share with corporate customers looking to buy these devices in bulk.

In all cases, all 3 of these types of people understands that there are strings attached to having custody of a device like this. All of them also understand that the device may or may not be ready for prime-time.

How much does ATT pay RIM per BIS subscriber? I always wondered that and could that be reason enough to delay the Bold.

this is the bold/Rogers thread... why ask something as irrelevant as AT&T delay?...

Agree with the above.

Anyway, I spoke to a Rogers rep on the phone today, said I want the Bold, (he was a newf) he put me on hold for a little while and came back stating indeed the Bold has been released in Canada as of today, he has no stock or pricing information. Suggested to me to try back in a couple days.

Also, had a friend call his friend who has one of those Rgoers retail front end stores. Guy put me on the waiting list with no real information for price, availability.

The reps and clerks have no clue what's going on with anything in regards to new phones or services at anytime. You're lucky if you get anything from CS even.

They have all been sworn to secrecy.

I hope it goes well for you guys on Rogers. Seems like they could careless about how many releases they have at once and that its good to be the king with more hot toys.

I wouldn't worry about it. I'm sure it's just info that's probably already out there. At the end of the day, all of this "inside info" and conjecture doesn't matter. The device will be released when it's released. We're going to be buying it. How much more do we need to know?

Why does it matter that the Rogers rep was a Newfoundlander?
