Default is 3G faster than EVDO from Verizon?

Please Login to Remove!

Hey guys,

Is 3G thru ATT or TMobile faster than EVDO currently on VZW? When VZW gets 3G, will that be pretty equal to the GSMs 3Gs?

Thanks

Default AT&T > Sprint > Verizon > TMobile

AT&T's current high speed network is about twice as fast as EVDO Rev A on either Sprint or Verizon, according to the tests we perform in my company. We primarily rely on Sprint & Verizon for our wireless cards but now that AT&T's high-speed network is built out (in time for the 3.5G iPhone in a few weeks), it is the superior choice.

Keep in mind that AT&T will soon ramp up the speed and we will be seeing 3-7MBit/sec downloads. I regularly get close to 2MBit/sec downloads with my AT&T HSDPA card, which is one revision behind the latest hardware, which theoretically could double my performance.

The reason you wouldn't notice a difference between the existing EVDO blackberries and their WiFi/Edge equivalents has to do with the dog-slow processor in them. This will change with the Bold, whose screaming fast chip will make things real exciting, really quick....

Well lets see here we are comparing ATT and Verizon I happen to be on Verizon. That only leaves one other network to use in the comparison.

Both Cleared out cache and temp files and loaded BBF he was maybe 6 seconds faster both on full bars of service.

Voice will still travel over the same frequencies as before. 3G HSDPA operates on a separate frequency that is just for data. And I do believe they can both be used simultaneously.

No need to be snippy, I was asking because your Pearl is 3G EVDO and the Curve from ATT is only EDGE. I would figure your EVDO would be faster.

Well I am sorry you think its snippy, I just figured it would have been obvious. and 3 to 6 seconds to me isn't even a real difference. That could be network interference. So who knows.

When I had my EVDO 8830 from Sprint, I didn't think the downloads were particularly fast either.
It should be interesting to see what the 9000 will do with 3G, the new OS and the faster processor.

FYI, EVDO is 3G.

I'm most interested in how the new browser works. I know it won't be as good as Safari, but I'm hoping for *almost* as good.

@ wabbit - I remember reading that 3.5 is simultaneous data/voice - which means you WILL be able to receive emails while talking on the phone. Currently with EVDO that is not the case - I use Sprint and sometimes its annoying to see a bunch of emails after a phone call but its not that much of a big deal - but it would be cool to be able to get on the web and search for a few things while talking on the phone.

The question was between 3G and EVDO, so comparing an EVDO Pearl to an EDGE Curve isn't really the comparison that was requested.

You definitely came off as snippy and it was unnecessary considering the fact that your comparison is not what was asked. It was a fair question for someone to turn around and ask you to clarify, since it was you brought EDGE to the table.

Getting back to the topic at hand, ATT's 3G network is most certainly faster than EVDO, however current devices (the Bold not withstanding) are hampered by their processor even with the faster connection. That's why Blackberry's connected via WiFi (certainly capable of being faster then any of the cell networks) still don't perform that much better.

It would seem that way because the speed limitation isn't really the download speed of the network. Its the performance of the unit, the bb browser, and the speed that the RIM servers render the page for you that limits it. Compare the speed of a WIFI BlackBerry browsing. It is similar in speed to browsing on an EVDO unit. WIFI SHOULD be faster no?

HSPDA/HSUPA is higher performing than EVDO and that is not an opinion. HSPA are considered 3.6G (3.5?) and has a much faster theoretical speed than EVDOs theoretical speed. Lots of people have run performance tests and posted results on the Internet ... and HSPA is always on top. My laptop connect card is a LOT faster than my friends Sprint one.

Bold is a much faster unit with a better browser. You will be able to see the speed difference better with that unit.

That HSPA network is faster not matter what you do. Its the unit that will limit the performance of browsing. The EVDO Curve has more memory than the EDGE curve on AT&T so it should go faster. In a unit like the Bold where you have a fast processor and considerably more memory, an HSPA Bold would kill one on EVDO just because HSPA is a faster network overall.

Minor correction, If your device is connected to 3g both voice and data use the HSDPA network. Being able to do both simultaneously is one of the advantages of HSDPA, not a sign that both GSM and HSDPA are being used concurrently.

This is so dependent on so many variables it is almost not worth arguing....
