Default Bold on pay as you go? - 06-17-2008, 07:57 AM

Will the BlackBerry Bold be sold on pay as you go when its out? I know no other BlackBerry is (it dosent seem like it, anyway) but I hope the Bold is as it looks like a good device and I refuse to sign a contract for any phone.

ummm no... it will not be pay as you go... (if by pay as you go you mean you buy air cards...)

and if you hate to sign contracts, then buy the phone at full price and then pay month to month for the monthly fees (this is the only way you can do it as RIM doesnt have anything for pay as you go for its BBs)

OK, but I read from another post on here that RIM are looking at the pay as you go market, is this true?

By pay as you go I mean you buy the phone then you top it up to use it.

Are you looking for something similar to what Virgin Mobile and TracFone does?

I have not heard anything available like this for the BlackBerry.

The post is here BlackBerryForums.com : Your Number One BlackBerry Community - View Single Post - BOLD or new 3G iphone?

I want to get a top-up card that I can take to any shop (almost any shop, anyway) and give it to the guy behind the counter along with, say, £10 and he will swipe the card and top the phone up by £10, so I now have £10 to use for whatever I want, when it runs out I go and get more credit.

I imagine this would get used up quickly, as the BB polls BIS accounts every 15 mins, seems like the data charges would quickly eat up the prepaid service.

There are offers (on O2 they are called bolt-ons) that give you free stuff such as a certain amount of data, minutes or texts.

You would maybe able to use a pre paid sim to make calls but I would imagine that would be about it.

Are you sure. I thought that the BIS polled every 15 minutes for mail and only notified your BB if there was a message. And are BIS to email provider traffic considered data or is it just data sent and received from your device.

I am absolutely in no way sure, but I am sure with the # of e-mails I get per day that I would check through a prepay card in a hurry.

Wirelessly posted

A company called Alcatel Lucient has developed pay and go / prepaid software for blackberry and it was recently launched with a carrier in I think Indonesia.

Widespread use of it is probably dependent on whether or not the carriers / networks implement or purchase the software.

I feel that more of us will have the option of having prepaid / pay and go in the future. I also feel that if implemented correctly it could become a lower cost solution to using Blackberries abroad.

I am not sure you could get all of the carriers to agree to using it. Do not see how they could get the pay as you go money to each carrier?

From the looks of these forums, we are already on pay as you go! <sad>
