If the upside is that consumers delay their purchase until your new device is released, and the downside is just a bunch of crabby forum posts....then the decision is a no-brainer. I believe this why even Apple, previously known for "announce it today so they can buy it tomorrow" has even started to announce things officially before they are available.
When I got that stupid hype E-mail from RIM, that was the day I was sure it would be a long time before we ever actually see the device on shelves. I continue to wait patiently.

Some may recall the "Osborne Effect" or "Osborne Myth" from the early 80s. Google this for some interesting reading about what some say could happen when a company announces a new product before it's ready.
And true indeed about Apple, but at least they gave the public an actual date (even if it ended up in disaster in some places).
