Default Rogers/Bold Purchase

Please Login to Remove!

I am going to be in Canada from August 20th until the 25th and am thinking about buying a Bold if it is (actually) released during that time period.

I understand that I will need to have it unlocked to run on my AT&T plan.

Question: I don't know much about Rogers, although my daughter, who attend McGill University in Montreal, has them as her carrier. If I have her "buy" the phone for me on her plan as an upgrade, will they force her to activate and/or buy a data plan? She currently uses a different device and so she would only be buying the phone so that I can get a (hopefully) discounted price.

Are there other options for buying from Rogers without activation and a plan?

Thanks.

Yes she will be forced into some type of BB data plan....... your best bet would be buy it straight out without contract......

option 2 she could upgrade, get the required data plan, then call in and downgrade back to her previous plan/phone not sure the restrictions Rogers places on their customers but its worth a shot.

Good luck and enjoy

I do NOT think you need a data plan to buy a BB. I know several people, including my sister who uses a blackberry that she bought from rogers without data.

I'm not sure about Rogers & ATT but not all the 3G frequencies are the same. I don't recall the frequencies off hand but it's been discussed on the forum here before.

The Bold supports the following 3G/UMTS frequencies: 850Mhz/1900Mhz/2100Mhz. As far as I know both Rogers and AT&T use at least one of these frequencies for their UMTS network. For AT&T it should be 2100Mhz and for Rogers 850Mhz and 1900Mhz.

Then it must be TMo's that's different.

Yep, they're rocking the 1700MHz band in addition to the 2100MHz.

I am going to have my daughter call and see if she can "upgrade" without a data plan. If not, I will likely just buy it without service and get it unlocked. Unless the price is insane and then I will wait for AT&T.

Interested in any other opinions on purchasing devices only from Rogers...

Any further ideas on if Rogers requires a data plan? I am sure the phone will cost twice as much if I just buy it outright while in CA.

Then of course I will be on vacation and trying to get it unlocked. Sure to be a real wife-pleaser!

i believe now a days with a devices like that you will need to go on some sort of data plan, whether it be BIS or BES... now the good thing is, but not really... is you can cancel the data plan, however it will cost you 10 a month in data early termination fees up to a total of $100... so if you go and get the phone on her plan, and cancel the data plan you will have to pay 100, then the cost of the bold at 399... so in your mind what is worth it, canceling and paying an extra 100 or buying it at full price of i believe 899

I guess the data plan and then canceling makes sense. Those are some pretty steep prices -- $399 upgrade and $899 with no plan. Plus the $100 data cancel plan. Plus the unlock charge.

I will be interested to see if AT&T pricing comes out in the next week or so. And of course it would be really miserable if there was any problem with an unlocked Rogers Bold on my AT&T network.

Thanks though for the input. I arrive in Montreal on August 21st, so I have a bit of time to give it some thought.

Default 1 month time frame before you can buy w/o contract

I believe it will be 1 month before you can buy the Bold without a contract, Rogers wants to lock in as many customers to a 3year plan before selling them on a no contract price, which I believe wil be a verty steep price.

If the full price without contract is indeed going to be 899, why is everyone on here calling the people buying them on ebay for $1000 idiots? Seems to me that 899+tax is not much different than $1000..... In fact where i'm at, 899+tax is 980......and why is tiger direct selling them for 680 on preorder if that were the no contract price. Not trying to say Cory is wrong, but something doesn't jive there. Either its going to be cheaper than that or mobilecity, tigerdirect and several other places are going to be taking it in the a** when it comes time to fulfill their preorders.....

or there 680 pre -order price is like a deposit... and you have to pay the rest later... and others are calling them idiots (not me) because the devices being bought in ebay are pre-release devices... meaning they will be turned off soon, if not already and you just paid 1000 for an expensive phone and text messager with a media player and PIM... thats it... no BIS or BES plans allowed as the PIN will be deactivated

I just reviewed the eBay link that had them going for $1025 and it is no longer working. I believe someone pulled the plug on them.
