Has anyone else had the trouble of Garmin rewriting addresses in your contacts list if you select the address containing suite/unit numbers or Canadian postal codes? It is extremely frustrating as my addresses get stipped of their last three digits of their postal codes or lose the suite numbers. Then the next time I sync with my PC, these changes are then transferred to my Outlook, screwing up my business contacts list.
Any work arounds? It would be nice if there was a feature for Garmin to create its Geocoordinates without needing to updating the addresses.

I bought and have been using Garmin 5.0.2 and have found it's routing to be horrible. You would think it would prefer highways and other main roads, but no matter what the settings are, it usually puts me on alternate routes and/or smaller roads which are most definitely not the fastest or shortest. I used it yesterday and it had me get off the hwy, drive like a 4 mile re-route, then get back on the same hwy. No rhyme or reason...hopefully this will get fixed in upcoming versions.

Sounds like everyone is excited about Garmin maps and GPS on their Blackberries. I cannot figure out why for the life of me.
Aren't you much better off buying a standalone GPS unit and leaving it in your car or moving it from car to car? Costs no more, has a touchscreen......
The only advantage of Garmin maps on your Blackberry is if you need GPS while walking around. If you do, download Blackberry maps (see threads elsewhere telling you how to do it), as I did, and you have a free GPS system on your phone.

Really? How about the full power of a Garmin stand-alone GPS system in your phone, that is with you no matter where you go or what you're doing (assuming your phone goes everywhere, of course). Sure, you can use BB Maps, but it is lame (as is Google Maps) when compared to the full-featured Garmin software. Horses for courses, I guess...

Although I do like the Garmin for the Blackberry, I still don't want to rely on my cell phone for GPS. Somewhere along the line on a long trip, I always lose service.
Garmin for the BB is not the full Garmin interface. Unless things have changed recently, area and road avoidance aren't there and you can't click on a traffic icon. I don't recall the detour feature there (but it may be, I only used the trial) and when it rerouted for traffic, it didn't give me a pop up screen.
I have Garmin for Windows Mobile as well as a stand alone unit 2730 (?). With WM, the maps are on a SD card which is much better; it uses data for traffic, weather, searches. I use that as my primary GPS although it doesn't seem to get a signal as fast as the standalone.
I think the perfect Garmin device would be a standalone unit that connected to my phone via bluetooth for data.
Blackberry Maps doesn't come close to Garmin or Telenav. I'll typically use Google Maps if I need directions and don't have a GPS.
Regards-Michael G.

A couple of very nice advantages of using Garmin Mobile on your BlackBerry are keeping track of one less device; having GPS with you all the time (my Bold is always close at hand); but perhaps the best difference is the integration with all your contacts.

I'm wondering the same thing. I've gone through all of the menu items and there doesn't appear to be any "check for update" type of function.
And going through their support site didn't turn up anything either.

You would think that through Garmin you could upgrade from 5.0.2 to 5.0.4 as handango probably is not going to upgrade me as I bought direct from garmin

There is one very large advantage with having GPS on a BlackBerry instead of standalone: Internet connectivity! By having a device with GPS and Internet connectivity, you get benefits that just aren't possible with a standalone unit:
* automatic map updates - you never need to purchase map updates, because the BlackBerry GPS software will always be pulling from the latest database that your software provider is running
* contact list integration - your contact list is in your BB, so with two clicks you can pull up a map or directions to your desired destination
* leveraging other location-aware applications - Google Street View, Wikipedia on Google Maps, Panaramio, Trapster are just a few of the examples of this exploding field of applications

When did 5.0.4 come out? I downloaded and just finished my free 7-day trial last week directly from Garmin and it was only 5.0.2.
I found this version (5.0.2) had issues with overwritting addresses in my contacts list (stripping suite numbers and the last three digits of the Canadian postal code), took unusual routing through the city, and was missing streets near my hourse. When I complained to Garmin, they suggested that I reenter all 500+ of my contacts with the suite numbers in Address line 2 (as Garmin will ignore this line and not rewrite it) and have recorded the postal code problem to be fixed in a future version. I am wondering if this new version 5.0.4 fixes these errors but now my 7-day trial has expired and I cannot test this.
Overall, I found Google Maps 2.3.2 much better as it could use addresses directly from my contact list without the need to move the suite numbers to address line 2, did not change the postal codes, had more recent maps including the missing ones near my house, and uses more direct routing through the city. This main disadvantages I find with GoogleMaps is it does not recalculate the route if I stray too far from it and I have to manually advance the turn-by-turn directions.

If it's out at all.....it would have had to come out after Jan 26th, as I received an email on that date from support telling me 5.0.2 was the latest/greatest.

I am running the 5.0.2 trial on a Bold that I downloaded yesterday OTA from Garmin. I own a Garmin Nuvi 780 and had Garmin Mobile XT on my WM6 based Blackjack II.
The audio quality is horrible compared to the other devices. Other audio like mp3’s and Video clips on the Bold sounds great. I have the audio set at 100% and the audio is not very loud and sounds very muffled.
Does anyone else have this issue?

I bought my Garmin 5.0.1 back in early October straight from the Garmin website.. so now that I see that 5.04 has been released I would like to upgrade to it as well... so, lets all put our heads together and figure out how to download the latest and greatest version from Garmin :P There must be a way!
EDIT: Well I upgraded to 5.0.2 by downloading off of the 'trial' link. I lost all my favorites and all settings in doing so but at least it appears to still be activated... Now to figure out 5.0.4... someone surely has a download link from a recent purchase perhaps?

I purchased the Garmin Mobile app from Handango in December and was given 5.0.4. However I didn't elect to pay for their "download protection" bogus ripoff fee, figuring I'd just download the app from Garmin if I needed to reinstall. I'm constantly checking for updates, but Garmin appears to only give out 5.0.2 when you visit their site.
Try downloading the trial from Handango if you want to get 5.0.4. I just pulled the trial from them a few weeks ago and I'm pretty sure that 5.0.4 is what I was given.
For the person asking if 5.0.4 fixes the address edit bug, well, it doesn't. I've had it geocode several addresses with "Suite X" in the address 2 line, and the Garmin app just deletes that value entirely. In fact, it appears to just delete ANYTHING in the address 2 field.

I actually tried that shortly after my last post, it ends up installing as a 2nd install so I have 5.0.2 from Garmin installed and 5.0.4 installed at once. The Handango one only runs as a 3 day trial and there is no way that I can see to activate it permanently, so it seems that perhaps the Handango 5.0.4 is simply a specially released version by Garmin made just for Handango, and that the newest version from Garmin themselves is likely 5.0.2.... but that's just a guess.
When I had 5.0.1 installed earlier today and downloaded 5.0.2 from Garmin it upgraded the 5.0.1 install (although I did lose all settings)... the 5.0.4 from Handango didn't offer to upgrade at all... oh well!
If anyone does figure out how to get 5.0.4 installed for ppl that bought their copy form Garmin directly, please do post on here

Thanks for the update. I am glad I did not invest the time moving all my suite numbers to the second address line like Garmin Support suggested I do if they will just get clobbered anyways.

Garmin : Handango version <> Garmin version -

The version on the Handango site is a "Handango branded" version and is slightly different from the version provided on the Garmin site. I originally downloaded the app from Garmin and then purchased the registration from Handango when I found that they had a 25% off sale. When I tried to apply the registration code from Handango, it would not work. The Garmin guy was kind enough to let me know that they are slightly different versions and that the reg code I received from Handango will ONLY work on the Handango version. It will NOT work on a NON-Handango Branded version.
I have not heard of this before - Does this happen with other software for the Blackberry? By the way, I asked for a refund from Handango and was willing to pay Garmin for the full version - Handango refuses to refund and provides no reason and Garmin is not willing to provide me with a "normal" code.
Has anyone else run into this?

sounds to me like 5.0.4 is Handango's version and the Garmin latest version is 5.0.2... I have 5.0.2 installed, went thru the trial and want to purchase.
another concern of mine (and please let me know if you have also experienced this) is that the voice guidance sometimes says "turn right on ..." and the actual turn is left and the screens shows left. it simply mis-speaks? kinda weird, but it can be bad if you dont have the screen in view and make a wrong turn!
If it ain't broke, fix it 'til it is!

I too have noticed that it says "turn right..." when it should be turn left. The first few times I figured I had mis-heard it. But it truly does say the wrong thing. This combined with it changing the postal codes on my address book entries, meaning that I now have to go fix them all will result in me deleting my demo and being glad that I hadn't purchased the product yet. :(

Thanks in advance for indulging some questions from a prospective user:
* Does the voice read street names ("turn right in 500 feet on to Maple"), or just give generic directioins ("turn right in 500 feet")?
* If you are talking on the phone, can I assume there the verbal commands are muted? Doesn't that render the device much less effective if you're actively on the phone while driving?
* Does the Bold slow down when multi-tasking with Garmin (i.e. doing more than one function while driving)?
* My use of Google Maps left me wishing the screen refreshed more quickly. Any feedback from Garmin users on screen refresh?
* Does Garmin incorporate "real-time" traffic information (color-coding of highways to reflect current speed and flow conditions)?
Thanks again.

I'm going to assume no, but figured I'd ask. I already own a Garmin Mobile receiver for my Palm 750. Anyway to just get the maps/software for free?
I love Garmin Mobile and having it on my phone, but I don't know if I'd pay $100 for it since I can just swap out my SIM card back into my Palm for the same system. I paid almost $200 for it back then too. :(
Well, I have the XT (SD card) version...

It's tied to a phone PIN, so even if I did give you the code, it would be totally worthless to you.

Time to "Acquire" Garmin/Satellite Signal -
05-19-2009, 07:26 PM
Just downloaded Garmin but am finding that it takes 5 to 15 minutes for the Bold to “Acquire” the satellite signal. Anyone else having this issue (I’m in the metro NY region, but in the burbs so not a high building issue)?
Any tips to get it to lock in quicker?
How quickly do yours' lock in?
