Thumbs up GARMIN v5.0.1 for Bold - 09-21-2008, 11:24 AM

All I can say is--WOW!!!

Seriously, this has to be rated as one of the best software for the Bold, period. I found it on one of the "archive" map/navigation softwares from the BlackBerry Home Page.

I was a bit nervous, because I wasn't sure if it would support the Bold. Not only does it support it, but it even has the perfect icon for it.

And the software is VERY polished. I actually own a Garmin C330 stand-alone unit, but in may ways, this is actually better (minus the touch screen--man, thinking this, the Storm is going to be awesome for this).

The menu is very pretty, very hi-res and easy on the eyes. Very big and colourful icons. It has night-mode too, so it doesn't kill your eye balls when driving with it at night.

Few key features that I have on this, but don't have on my stand-alone C330 Garmin:

Contact: Yep, it links to your address book. Select this option, and it will pull the address from your contacts list. Asks you if you want Work, Home, or whatever address.

Traffic Update: I guess it gets it from the interweb...

Panoramio: Basically, pulls out all the scenic areas, of your current location. With photos. If you like "going out for drives" this is very, VERY cool. I am currently visiting my parents who live in small town, and sure enough, it even has the small waterfalls nearby listed. Tells you how far it is from your current location. With photos to go with it. And you select go, and it will start navigating you there. I am so impressed.

Always Updated POI: Point of Interest, for GPS noobs. Yep, it uses Google, so the information is always updated. Gives you the phone number of the place too.. and one touch calling. You know, in case you want to make reservation.

Flight Status: I guess if you are a frequent flyer mile collector, this would come in handy. Basically, you select this option, and it pulls up all the near by airports. After you select one, you can check flight number, list departures and list arrivals. For kicks, I did Pearson Toronto, Departure, Air Canada, and sure enough it pulls up all the information from the Airport!! Tells me which terminal, what time the flight took off, where it is going, when it is scheduled to land, and when it actually landed.

That's the only difference I could find from my stand-alone C330 Garmin GPS.

Other notes... route calculations are very quick.

I was just bored so I downloaded this software.. but I think I will actually buy it. It's like Garmin device with internet access. It can do so much more than a stand-alone GPS.

List of short comings compared to the stand-alone device? The speakers aren't as good (still quite good though, since Bold has very nice speakers for a phone). Data entry while driving, is a lot easier on the standalone (nice big touchscreen buttons). Bigger screen on the standalone, barely.. but Bold makes up for it with double the resolution and way better brightness. Maps, when zooming in & out, or panning, takes longer to display, since it is pulling the data over the area; whereas the standalone has the map stored inside. And the actual act of navigation isn't quite as polished as the stnad-alone device. Overall though, there are more pros than cons, IMO.

Price-wise, it is $99.99... and maps never go out of date.

Somebody on another thread mentioned something about ProClips for perfect vehicle mounting (they make 2 part mounts--one for specific to the device, and other back piece specific to the vehicle). I might have to go this route.

Going to be rougly $200 investment after all said and done.. but I think it is worth it, for all its functionality.

I just downloaded 5.0.1 for the Curve and I too am very impressed. Unfortunately, I don't have a Bold yet (waiting for AT&T to get it out), and you review of this application has just made my pain with waiting even harder to bear.

I agree, though, that this is a very nice application. I am going to test it out tomorrow when I head in to work. Looks like it will work very, very well, and this is coming from a TomTom user. Now if TomTom would release something...

Yeah, I used TomTom quite a bit with my old Treo 650.

Map view wise, I really loved TomTom (I loved how the camera squatted down more, to give you a more driver's point of view, as opposed to bird's eye view).

I just didn't like it because of the map information...... it was really hard to find addresses, because it was a little too specific. It would break up cities into little towns that nobody calls by. Garmin would have both names, so it was easy.

The only down side to this is if I drove out of the country with this. I would ring up serious roaming data fee.

I have the trial downloaded and working on my Bold. It's great! Just one problem, when I log into my Garmin account online to pay for it, I see they do not sell online to Canada, just the USA. Anyone in Canada been able to purchase this?

thanks.

Hmm I haven't attempted to buy it yet. I did see not see a Canada option either... :(

In the past though, I have been able to purchase things where it was for "US Only". I would use any state & zip code.. but enter in my real City, Province and Postal Code in the 2nd line of the address. And it would always go through.

Sorry to quote myself, but I believe I found my answer. It can be purchased at Shopping Cart : Handango

Enter coupon code of SAVE20NOW and it's $79.99 (vs. $99.99 at Garmin). Clicking 'continue' takes me to a page where I can select the Balckberry device (Bold) and payment options, which include Paypal.

Buying now...

When you buy from Handango, does it matter which device you choose? I can't select Garmin Mobile for the Blackberry Bold, but I can choose it for the 8800 and others. Are all the devices running on the same executable file? I'm using the demo version of 5.0.1 with good results right now, all I need to do is purchase an activation code. Thanks.

*UPDATE* I was only able to download a later release of v4 from Handango. Needless to say the activation code didn't work on the 5.0.1 demo. Has anyone on the Rogers network managed to get an activation code for the v5 demo?

I purchased from Handango but received code for V4. I have requested the code for V5 or a refund. V4 works in Canada on the Bold but the UI is very poor compared to the newest.

How did you download V 5.0.1 for the Bold from Garmin? I tried Garmin Mobile - but it told me it wasn't supported for my device.

I'd like to know how to get Garmin 5.x on my Bold as well. I'm with Rogers in Canada. I'm running into the same problem as everyone here trying to find a OTA download link that will work with a BB Bold. Hmmmrph

EDIT: Found a download link on another thread on this forum but I only have 4 posts and need 10 to post links so I can't share it with you, but it is under "BlackBerryForums.com : Your Number One BlackBerry Community - BlackBerry Technical - GPS & Mapping - Garmin Mobile™for BlackBerry"

Still need to find out how to buy it in Canada though

Does this really work - I tried it last night and it did not process payment. What format did you use for the items in the 'line two' field?

I will be up against similar next month when I get the Bold myself.

I was unable to purchase Garmin Mobile directly from Garmin (both online or on the telephone) because they won't sell to users in Canada. The trial worked fine on my 8800. I then saw the application on Handango, and purchased it. It's worked fine ever since on the 8800.

Firstly, I understand that I have a device only licence. I fully understand that, have no problem with it (sure, I might be miffed if my 8800 died and I got a replacement, but otherwise I understand the terms/conditions).

Now, when it comes time that I get my Bold, if I go to Handango, it does not show the Bold as supported. One workaround from the other thread, is to specify you have an 8300 Curve and DL the software (and pay, of course) that way. However, that will (if I understand correctly), only get you the v4.xx version.

So how does one get the v5.xx version if you are a Canadian user?

- Handango? Can't, Bold isn't showing as an available model.

- Handango and specify 8300 Curve? Would work but you get v4.xx version.

- Direct from Garmin? They won't sell to Canadian users.

Now, I haven't clicked on any of those links in this thread or the other yet (since I don't have the Bold yet), so I can't tell if it's for a trial or whatnot. But this is what we (users outside of the US) are up against: can't get any version from Garmin, and/or the version we get from Handango via work-around, is the older version 4... so buying at Handango and calling Garmin for a v5 link and v5 code seems to be out.

The voice navigation in Garmin is what I like. No need to constantly look at your small blackberry screen to see when you need to turn next.

Of course, one could argue that you are better off spending $100-200 for a standalone GPS for your vehicle instead of spending $100 USD on this.... I'm still not sure what I want to do.

Since I'm in Canada I may have to just settle for google maps for now anyways since from what all you are saying us Canadian's can't get Garmin 5.x anyways!

I'm sure there is a way -- I just haven't figured it out yet. ;)

I have been following all the Garmin posts in preparation for getting the Bold, but I can't actually do anything to actually know, without the device.

I'm actually quite happy with v4 as it is -- I'd be blissfully happy (and ignorant) of any newer version had I not read about v5 here, haha.

As a side note, I also am an owner of Wayfinder Navigator. I had v6.x which was buggy but useable (also was a $99 one-time purchase). I upgraded to v7.x and it SUCKED. The maps were better but the interface went from... how can I describe this... from client type app to a web interface look. I am probably doing a poor job of describing it but let's just say I didn't like it at all.

Google Maps is crap compared to this! Try it first, then compare.

You can't actually use Google Map by yourself while you are driving while you are lost. Impossible.

This talks to you, and gives you 3D near first person view. Way better!

I agree

I've now loaded Nav4All and CoPilot on my BB Bold. I will try them in the next few days to see how they compare to Garmin.

Anyone else here tried a variety of voice-navigation GPS mapping programs on their Blackberry? I'm wondering what you think is the best one...

(FYI: Nav4All is totally free, CoPilot is free for 6 months...)

It's the same code they give me at the time of purchase. Well I replied stating it's the same code and to please provide me with a working code for the current trial which is v5 or refund my purchase.

I agree, this app looks awesome on the Bold and it has a lot of options... but I'm having GPS issues. I'm having problems connecting to my GPS. It says 'no GPS reception ' even though I'm in an area that shouldn't have any problems. My BB Maps and Google Maps are able to find my location fine... anyone else have this issue?

FYI - I just went through all this with Handango and they issued me a refund because they do not sell v.5 at the moment.

I wound up getting a refund from Handango as they couldn't provide the activation code for 5.0.1. Payment won't process through Garmin, even with the Canadian address on the second address line. Too bad because I really like it. Maybe I can find someone in the US to purchase it on my behalf. What a pain.

I just told Garmin my BB was an 8820. I had already downloaded the trial and it was working fine on my Bold. When I activated the code on MyGarmin, it did require me to put the Carrier and Model of BB.

Now, according to Garmin, my code is good for the life of the 8820... and it never went on the 8820, just the Bold. Shrugs. It's working. That's all I care about.

I am looking at this as a back up for when I don't travel with my nuvi. It happens sometimes. It will be interesting to see what it does when I am outside the US. I'll post those results when I am in Argentina in 2 weeks.

Until then.......

Well Nav4All and CoPilot just do not compare to Garmin 5.0.1... so I'm going to have to find a way to purchase this thing as a Canadian!

I'm sure if we all put our heads together we'll figure it out :P

Well, if Garmin does want my Canadian money then fine, I'll go elsewhere. I am going to try out the trial though.

I find it amazing that they're going to so much length to not allow us to buy it. Very interesting indeed.

One thing that I need from my handheld GPS though is the ability to have local maps. If im off hiking without a signal, I dont want my GPS to fail. It would be nice if you could use the garmin maps that fit on the SD memory stick like some of their GPS models...

Default How to install Garmin 5 on Blackberry Bold 9000 - 09-27-2008, 03:35 PM

I figured out how to install the new garmin software onto the bold in canada on rogers.

go to the garmin blackberry site: http ://www8.garmin.com/mobile/blackberry/?__utma=1.4070892485130490400.1222543379.122254337 9.1222543379.1&__utmb=1.1.10.1222543379&__utmc=1&_ _utmx=-&__utmz=1.1222543379.1.1.utmcsr=garmin.com|utmccn= (referral)|utmcmd=referral|utmcct=/garmin/cms/site/us/onthego/&__utmv=-&__utmk=235940865

then select buy now for blackberry with built in gps.

checkout when you come to the cart.

now you should be at a screen to fill in a shipping address. fill in anything as long as there is a legitimate city, state and zip code that match. input your own phone number. DESELECT shipping address is the same as billing address.

at the next page you fill in your own billing address. here you can put in a Canadian address. put in your proper billing address. note: you may have to input your billing address in your garmin account.

after this fill in your credit card info and purchase the saftware. as long as it goes through, there should be a download button on the next screen. here you need to select your device and carrier. I selected at and t and then the 9000. this will give you the activation code.

for downloading the software I'd recommend doing it here:

http: //orange.garmin.com/builtforblackberry/

access this from your blackberry.

once downloaded and installed, input the activation code and you are all set.

it worked for me, let's hope it works for you!

Hi everyone...

How does Tele-nav stack up to this app?

Hi...

I just downloaded the Garmen 5 version and it seems a bit more robust than the Telenav. I was able to quickly determine local eateries quickly and the map came up very fast.
I am going to continue to test this as we have some of our managers on Telenav.
It looks like the Garmen V5 is a bit faster...??
Does this version work in concert with the Garmen Mapquest feature where you can send maps and directions to the device?

EDIT
I was on the Garmin site and you have to pay $99.00 for this. Telenav is 5.99 per month for me as I have the old plan - The new At&t branded Telenav is now 9.99 per month ... So, is this $99.00 a one time fee?
Anyone?

H.
