Show Clock Screen on Idle -
10-04-2008, 04:14 PM
Hi everyone.
Is there any way to display the clock screen automatically after a certain time. Like, everytime you put the Bold on the case or after 1 mins of standby?
Actually I assigned the right-key button to start the clock.
TIA, Diego

There is not a way to go to the clock on Idle. There is only a setting to display the clock (or Bedside Mode) when the phone is being charged.
Perhaps this can be developed as a 3rd party app.
EDIT: I did some looking and your request would be a very nice feature addition to the BBLight App. Since the app monitors the status of the phone and reacts accordingly, the display of the clock would fit nicely. I would suggest contacting the developer.

Not necessary. I was thinking at something like the screen saver mode for symbian. Blackberry on main screen for more then 1 minutes (time set-able), clock starts automatically. After 2 minutes (time set-able) the "energy saving mode" starts and turns the display off, or whenever you put the BB in its case, folder, display turns off, when you take it out, clock apps appairs again.
I do not think this will drain the battery so quickly. Yes, it's always an app that runs in the background, but just as many others. Doesn't the BB messenger runs in the background as well????

What dimarche is describing above I had on my Nokia E62 (symbian). The screen when into a sort of reflective display mode after an idle period. I'm probably not describing it well but the backlight would go out, the screen would be black BUT if you held the display just right, it would display the date and time (which did not resemble your home screen, so it was a completely different mode). Myself, I had an application that would display the current weather conditions and temperature when it went into this reflective mode.
I too think that would be a cool feature for BB's, and displaying the weather or date/time on the homescreen would hardly be a security breach; yet display more information than... well, nothing. It should of course still require unlocking, just like it does now.
When I bought my current BB last year, I bought a "Screensaver Clock" type application. That turned out to be a few dollars poorly spent, since after a few minutes, my display went out. In hindsight, I guess it would have worked in conjunction with BBLight (in USB charging mode), but since I was using Pocket Day as my main screen, it really wouldn't have ended up as a screen saver anyways.

While I wasn't the original author of BBLight, I think BBLight should be updated for this.
The new BlackBerries (BlackBerry Bold) have a Bedside mode, which is able to set the backlight on to a super-dim mode that's far dimmer than the 10% brightness level in Options->Screen/Keyboard.
One can in theory leave the BlackBerry backlight on 24/7 for a few days at this super-dim 1% level. So BBLight should be able to call up this super-dim backlight mode, then we'd have something similiar to the old reflective-only BlackBerries where the screen was always on even when idling.
Thus, a new BBLight should have support for the 1% backlight brightness mode.
RIM JDE call:
net.rim.device.api.system.Backlight
setBrightness(1); // Set backlight to 1% brightness, similiar to Bedside mode
I wish RIM's Screen/Keyboard settings would allow me to use this 1% setting, because it's useful for nighttime use of the BlackBerry without ruining my night vision -- the Bold screen is way too bright in a theater, restaurant, bedroom, even at minimum brightness setting, but the Bedside mode brightness is perfect and very discreet.
Thanks,

Arrrh but there is a way, maybe lame but you could have your shortcut key assigned to the alarm clock, turn off your backlight function and wella! This will show the clock on idle (without it having to be charged)

I have sent a PM to the developer of BBLight to see if we can get this in as an update.
Good post Mark, thanks for the info.

This feature will be in all devices 4.6+ as well. So with the 4.6 JDE out there this indeed should be doable. Only bad thing would be the change in battery life it would have. The Bold battery is not nearly as good as the curve or before, so this could prove problematic.

Sith you are right this would put drain on the battery if left on. A screensaver mode, if not dimmed to 10%, would zap the battery very quickly.
For my purposes I am hoping a bedside mode (without killing the radio) could be added for when the phone is charging. Much the same function that BBLight currently has.

Bedside mode is set from the clock app "When charging: Display Clock / Enter Bedside Mode / Do Nothing ". This is nice, but for me its not enough. At night when I set my Bold in the charger I do want it to enter bedside mode, but for all the other times of the day, I would like it to either do nothing or display the clock.
Bedside Mode, and the "When Charging" event action, have been a great addition to the OS, but people are looking for the functionality to be enhanced.

I agree. Bedside mode should be enable only when charger is on and during a set time interval (e.g. from 9pm to 8am).

Is there a 3rd party application out there for the BB Curve? I would like one that displays a clock with the backlight set on very low when I set it on the charging cradle.

No idea...
You may have more luck in the Curve forum... Bold is the first BB I've ever had so I'm pretty new to all this.
My other (main) phone is a Nokia N82.
Now if only someone can combine a Bold and an N82 and I'll have my perfect phone

As for the clock on idle, I know the Sony K800 does this with the "reflective" display... all dimmed out but you can see it at the correct angle.
