Default May Just Get An Unlocked Bold

Please Login to Remove!

Okay, so with the dates for AT&T's release of the Bold jumping all over the place, and with my frustration level at its highest (yes, I realize there are better things to worry about), I am considering getting an unlocked Rogers Bold for use on AT&T's network. I have questions, some of which I can't find what I consider definitive answers to. So, for those that are using Rogers Bolds on AT&T's network with 3G coverage, could you please take a moment to help me out? Thanks.
  1. I know the phone will work on EDGE, but I want to confirm that 3G service works. I think it does, but just want to be sure. I can find articles that suggest it doesn't, but this could be a foreign SIM card or other issues at play, and not specifically that the device is unlocked from Rogers.
  2. I am a bit confused about Vendor IDs and unlocking. If I understand correctly, each device is hard-coded for a vendor. For example, my Curve's Vendor ID is 102 (AT&T). So, if I get the Rogers Bold, it will have a different ID, correct? Further, what does the phone look like when I start it? Does it display a Rogers splash screen? Is there any way to change this? Does it even matter?
  3. Along the same lines as the Vendor ID, what about carrier specific themes, wallpaper, etc? How do I get those? Is it even possible to get those?

I think that is really about it about the device. My last question is a request for recommended resellers. I have been looking at Horizon Wireless as they are a sponsor. Any advice on where to get the Bold?

Thank you very much for helping with this. I have bought plenty of BlackBerry devices in the past, but they have all been from AT&T directly; I've never bought an unlocked device for another carrier. I feel like I should keep waiting for the AT&T device, but when I stop and think about it, I don't know why I feel that way. It should be the same device as the Rogers, right? Anyway, price isn't the issue, as I would have to buy the Bold from AT&T outright (in other words, I don't get a contractual discount), so no need to factor that into your responses.

1. Yes, 3G works fine on AT&T with an unlocked Rogers branded 9000.

2. The device splash screens will be branded with Rogers' logo. They can't be removed. No, it doesn't matter in the slightest bit.

3. You'll probably not want to use any other theme than the default. (It's gorgeous.) Using other carrier's themes, or third-party themes, is possible if you want to.

  1. I purchased an unlocked Rogers Bold. Upon receiving it from the FedEX truck, I registered the phone through BIS, pulled the SIM from my at&t 8310, and popped it into the Bold and powered up. From that point on, I have not had a single network compatibility issue. It worked as well as the branded 8310 did. No calls to at&t were needed. On thing to note, if you do ever call at&t CS, they will give you endless warnings and disclaimers about using an unlocked phone on their network.
  2. Once the phone is unlocked, the original vendor ID has no noticeable effect on service. It does display the Rogers Splash Screen, there is no way to change it, and it really makes little difference. In fact I kind of like having a Rogers phone in the US. I have had many people ask about the branding (after they ask about the phone of course).
  3. The Themes are pretty much the same, with the exception of the branded home screen wallpaper. The Themes coming out from the new theme builder are far more customized than the Carrier Themes.
I would keep an eye on the Buy Sell Trade Section of this site, and find a seller with good feedback. In some cases you can get the phone for $700 USD unlocked .

Thanks so much for the responses. Sounds good. I'll check out gsmphonesource, too.

As for the themes, really all I was hoping to get my hands on is the AT&T wallpaper. No idea why, as I'll likely change it some time down the road, but that blue against the black case of the Bold has really caught my attention.

I bought mine from Fommy. Got it in 2 days, put in the sim card, did a device switch from Desktop Manager and everything transferred over including my ringtones. Even my new pin was recognized by BB messenger. I upgraded the OS to .147 and it works great. The only thing is the 3G. I don't get any 3G service. Spoke to my friend who is an ATT wholesaler and he thinks they are holdong up opening 3G to phones other than the Iphone yet and that this phone will really hurt Iphone which is part of the reason they keep pushing back the release. I also downloaded the today theme from Marco which looks great and works fine. Love the phone. The Rogers makes no difference to me, actually makes it even more unique

Good point Ragz...

No matter where you get the phone from, upgrade the OS to the newest you can find ASAP. You'll be happy you did.

Well the AT&T launch of the BOLD seems pretty close:

I've been trying to figure out if having a locked Rogers phone prevents me from using data over WIFI for premium applications like Poynt.

Web browser, email, and IM (Google Talk, BB Messenger, MSN Messenger) all work just fine using strictly wifi. Facebook application, Gmail, application, Poynt, and potentially most other applications seem to work for me using only 3G which costs $$$.

With your unlocked BB9000, are you capable of using these applications with wifi only?

If anyone can shed some light on this it would be greatly appreciated.

The only reason I can come up with for being able to access Gmail over wifi with a web-browser and not over wifi with Gmail app is because this is how Ted Rogers makes his money.

My phone is unlocked, and all features work as they should. I had an issue with 4.6.0.15x and wifi, but once I upgraded things worked fine again.

The applications need to be designed to run over the wifi connection. Gmail, Google App Launcher, JiveTalk work, while Poynt, BBWeather, do not and Google Maps map data does not load.

So its hit or miss, and seems that the app developer would need to make changes to the data transfer methods in order to get things working. I do not think this has to do with the carrier at all.

Sorry to get off topic, but just had to comment.

I too, rather like having a Cingular branded phone (8800) in Canada and enjoy having people ask about it. Sadly (NOT!), I will be switching to a Rogers branded Bold at the end of the week.

As for the splash screen, how many people are "around" when you reboot your phone besides yourself? Makes no difference to me either.

I posted this on another thread:

"Personally, I bought an unlocked Rogers BB Bold via a friend of mine in Toronto who then shipped it to me. The cost was C$649 plus S&H. However, my best friend just bought an unlocked Rogers BB Bold from a re-seller in the US. She used PureMobile, sorry I don't know the website. She paid more than me, they charged her $759 plus 20-something bucks for S&H. But they were reliable and the shipping was really fast and the unit is exactly the same as mine, i.e., Rogers branded but unlocked. One thing - both she and I had to take our Bolds in to the AT&T stores (I went to an authorized retailer) as the settings need to be changed from the Rogers pre-configurations to the AT&T settings. It took about an hour. Or if you are tech-savvy, maybe you could do it yourself. Anyway, those PureMobile guys really do have the unlocked units."

Thanks everyone. I have plenty to think about. It's strange... I've never been this excited about a phone before, even the iPhone. I already have accessories, parts, etc. waiting patiently (more patiently than me) for the arrival of the Bold. If I had any hair, I figure I would have pulled it out by now.

Well, here is another pleased Rogers unlocked Bold user. I purchased from the Buy Sell Trade section on this forum from jgudnas and got it the next day. Took sim card out of 8310- put it in 9000, I have one exchange email address and several regular email accounts, all set up flawlessly, everything has worked perfectly, including 3G here in the Dallas area. Rogers splash screen is there, but like Klotar said, who really sees that anyway. I, like you are right now, just got tired of waiting on ATT. Love the Bold. Sweet device.
