I'm hearing of some people having the most success when converting to mpeg-4 format.

Just use Handbrake (works on Windows and Mac, maybe other platforms as well), and select the iPhone/iPod Touch preset. Make sure to select stereo audio, and you can reduce the bitrate for video down to 600-800 if you want to reduce the file size a bit.

Rip, load, and enjoy.

Nevermind... it sounds like you are wanting to convert existing video files to play on the Bold, not rip DVDs.

mpeg-4 is the way to go, if you have issue with playback, you may need to adjust your bitrate/frame rate. If you are a Mac user I have had total success with iSquint.

Well done ifonline.

Before iSquint I used this: 3GP Video Converter for Mac - mpeg to 3GP, convert all video formats to 3GP on Mac OS. Its not free, but worked well.

MP4 and AVI are containers for the encoded media. MPEG-4 is a codec used to encode. So you can have an MPEG-4 encoded movie with a .AVI file extension. Alternatively you can have an AVC/H.264 encoded movie, with a .AVI file extension.

MPEG-4 as an .AVI file is my preferred movie format for the Bold.

hmmm... i'm finding it hit and miss with putitng videos onto the bold... like, if i put in full episodes of tv shows (that are .avi), some of them tend to lag with sound or the video slows and skips... it's annoyingg...

any suggestions? i'm a mac user but not so savvy in converting videos etc...

I have found the application and the codec used are the common culprit in video issues. What application are you using and what are your settings?

I've had the same.. best success seems to come from converting with something like Videora (free program). A well converted DivX/XviD file seems ok though. Perhaps the problem may be variable bit rate MP3 audio perhaps ? I'm not too sure.

Default xVid problems and file conversion

Hi guys,

xVid doesn't play well on my Bold. The sound and image are not synchronized. I hear some people say that they have no problems playing xVid after updating the phone's software (?). I'm using v4.6.0.162.

Regarding converting the files to better play on the Bold, when I upload my [xVid] files to the phone using the software that came with the phone (CD), it asks me if I want to optimize the video for playback on the Bold. It (Roxio, I guess) converts the file from *.avi to mp4. But it's not cool, takes too long :( ... I really wish I could play xVid since it's partially supported (what the hell that's supposed to mean anyway.)

Everybody gets that program when they buy the phone, I suppose...

Thx!
