Default Caller ID problem

Please Login to Remove!

I just got a replacement Bold From Rogers. My last Bold had a keyboard issue and also a phonebook issue. with my new Bold i have noticed that when someone calls me who is saved in my phone book, incoming call will show either only the phone number or the name and the number of the network. but if i go back to my call log i will see the incoming name as its saved on my phone book. for example of john doe calls me which his network name is John Doe but I have him saved as JOHN 2. when john calls me i would See John Doe but if i go to my call log after I would see JOHN 2

does anyone have any ideas how to fix this? I did reinstall the software and etc.

I think what he means by network name, is the name stored in a central phone database. The same database that your home phone service would use. If you have call display at home, when someone calls you, the name you see is the "Network Name"

CallerID via the network has priority over the addressbook lookup. However, the call log uses the addressbook only. That is the way it is.

In my case, if I call my BB from my house phone, on the incoming call dialog, my name is always in capitals (as per CallerID via the network). Since I have myself in my addressbook, the caller log always shows lower case because that is the way I entered myself.

If you want John Doe to show as John Doe in the call log and not John 2, just change your addressbook entry. If, like me, you like to have duplicate entries so that you can voice-dial John 2 (e.g. it's easier to say than John Doe), then just have John 2 named slightly differently so that it comes below John Doe in your addressbook. The phone book is sorted in alphabetical order and the call log uses the address with the first number that matches. Since John 2 comes alphabetically before John Doe, do it like this (I just tested it):

First Name: John Last Name: Doe

First Name: John 2 Last Name: <blank>

John Doe will be listed before John 2 if you do it that way, and John Doe will display in your call log instead of John 2 if the numbers are the same, of course.

Well my other Blackberry Bold did not do this nor did the other Blackberries I had. it always showed the number with the name I have stored in my Phonebook. I have 695 names in my phonebook and soem names have 3 numbers or more. it is hard for me to remmeber the numbers since this bold will not show the saved name in the phonebook.
I talked to Rogers today and the tech support tried # different Bolds and they showed the name saved in the phonebook. however Rogers is telling me BB will not replace the unit for me since they dont consider this defective.

What version of the OS are you running on your new Bold?

I don't see this behavior on my Bold. I just called from my house, and the information stored in my address book (name, number, and photo) all displayed properly on the incoming call screen.

Ah. Was hoping this was just an issue with an older OS. Sorry I can't help then. My Bold works as you are expecting yours to work.

Do you have true callerID service with Name Display? On Rogers in Canada, we have to specifically subscribe to this service, just like on landline phones.

It'd been about a year since I asked forum users about callerID service in the US, but at that time, AT&T and T-Mobile did not have callerID Name Display service. Perhaps that's changed now.

What I'm saying is that when you get an incoming call on your BB, you are really only getting the NUMBER. The BB then takes that number and matches it to your addressbook entry and displays the name. On Rogers in Canada, the service transmits the number AND the NAME (works just like for landline phones), and that takes priority over whatever is in your BB addressbook for that number.

Ah... not too sure about AT&T Wireless and their Caller ID implementation, then. Hopefully it stays as is.

Rogers claims to be the only wireless provider in North America that offers Call Display with Name Display service. As far as I know this is still true.

I have subscribed to this Rogers service for about a year now, but have only been getting a number displayed on incoming calls (unless the entry was stored in my address book.) I finally got around to calling tech support yesterday and they "reset" the service on my account and it appears to work now.

What I find interesting is that if I have someone's work number stored in my address book and that contact has an extension number at the office, when they call me from that line, it will only display the company's main line number, but NOT the person's name (despite the fact that they're stored in my address book!)

Any workaround to this?

p.s. I've always been under the impression that the device address book overrides network ID

I had the same issue as maxster (but for AT&T in California). The security change fixed it. Note that I only got that issue while the phone was locked (keypad locked and I have a password). If the phone was unlocked/normal, caller ID would work normally.
