It'd been about a year since I asked forum users about callerID service in the US, but at that time, AT&T and T-Mobile did not have callerID Name Display service. Perhaps that's changed now.
What I'm saying is that when you get an incoming call on your BB, you are really only getting the NUMBER. The BB then takes that number and matches it to your addressbook entry and displays the name. On Rogers in Canada, the service transmits the number AND the NAME (works just like for landline phones), and that takes priority over whatever is in your BB addressbook for that number.
Rogers claims to be the only
wireless provider in North America that offers Call Display with Name Display
service. As far as I know this is still true.
I have subscribed to this Rogers service for about a year now, but have only been getting a number displayed on incoming calls (unless the entry was stored in my address book.) I finally got around to calling tech support yesterday and they "reset" the service on my account and it appears to work now.
What I find interesting is that if I have someone's work number stored in my address book and that contact has an extension number at the office, when they call me from that line, it will only display the company's main line number, but NOT the person's name (despite the fact that they're stored in my address book!)
Any workaround to this?
p.s. I've always been under the impression that the device address book overrides network ID
