The groove helps protect accidental "clicking" of the trackball. The gap that the groove creates also allows for reduced contact of trackball to case. You also need to consider proximity sensor feature that shuts off the screen backlight as soon as you slide your BlackBerry into place. The sensor also allows you to switch automatically to different notification settings (for ringing, vibration or both) based on whether your BlackBerry is in or out of its case.
