Does this thing have an airplane mode? Is turning off ALL connections the way to achieve this?

Manage Connections and turn all off. That is the equivalent of 'airplane mode'.

Do that when you turn OFF your device upon take off, and when you are in the air, and turn the BB back on, the radio connections will be off.
