Does the trackball require pressure to scroll?

Hello folks,

Finally got my Bold today. I generally think it's awesome, but I have one question: my trackball only scrolls when I push it in a bit as I'm running my finger over it. If I just glide my finger over it (like I'm used to w/ the Curve), the cursor doesn't move. This is slightly annoying. Is this by design or should I take this thing back to the store?

mine is the same, i wouldn't say pressure but definitely different than the curve!! looks like it's by deign

there should be no pressure, the ever so slight movement from your thumb should move it

OK, yeah, especially when I'm scrolling upwards this thing sticks. I'd say for every three spins upwards, only one "takes." It's pretty darn annoying. I don't want to return a $300 phone for something this minor, but I also think I'm entitled to a scrollwheel that works. Any advice?

did you try going under screen/keyboard under options and changing the trackball sensitivity?

Yeah, thanks for the tip. I've turned that setting to 100. It's a little hard to explain, but when it does "take" it flies. It's just that 2/3 times there's no response. If it was like this in all directions, I'd say I just need to get used to the thing. But it only happens when I'm moving upwards; every other direction is completely responsive. I'm starting to think I'll stop by AT&T tonight and ask if this is normal. It's pretty annoying--it's like a car that can't go in reverse, you know? Kind of a necessary feature.

I hear ya, i'd stop by at&t and see whats up!!

My pearl ball was so smooth and had absolutely zero grinding feeling when rolling it. This one being new is all gritty feeling when you scroll and the worst part is that the ball is so recessed compared to the pearl ball. I wish it protruded some more so you could move the cursor more in one swoop.

i noticed the same.

my solution: changed the sensitivity

vertical: 80
horizontal: 80

now its perfect!

I noticed a little pressure does need to be applied. I also found the perfect settings to be 80, 80. 90 was too fast and 70 was too slow. 80 was just right :).

mine doesn't seem to get any traction when scrolling vertically upwards unless i put a substantial amount of pressure on it. I am beginning to wonder if it is a defective unit.

I'm IT at my company and have hands on with a lot of these device (dose not hurt to be 5 blocks from RIM either or that our company does media for them) I have a Bold that is from AT&T unlocked and i find that it is the same as my old Curve just touching the ball shows activity. I do know one thing though my device is rare as it was built in Canada so I'm wondering if they did some changes to the parts for ones made in different countries or. I also have another user in house that has the exact same issue that you have described. you have to put slight pressure on the ball to get it to take. i was playing with it and found it very hard to use my self as its hard too keep pressure on it steady with my thumb scrolling without clicking or not enough pressure. I wonder if this is a defect on some of them.
