1.Is there a way to change the notification sound when I get new SMS message or email?

2.What exactly does the on/off option do? If I enable it does it mean I can still receive phone calls but the push mail is turned off for the time being?

yes, if you go to profiles, which you can find my scrolling to the upper left side of the screen and click on the speaker and scroll down to advanced, click normal if that is the profile you want to change and in there you will be able to change notifiers and alert sounds.
Where are you seeing on/off? if it's the red circle that power the phone off!!
