Default GMAIL Requires data connection

If you are connected via WiFi why would the Gmail app fail with a "requires data connection"?

My Bold works fine while my friends does not. He is just using the device as a phone. He does not have a Blackberry data package. He is Fido user

Does this make a difference?

Thanks
Paul

Yes, you need a data plan.

But why would my Gmail work over Wifi. I've turned off the network and tested it solely on wifi and it still works.

Because you have a BlackBerry Data Plan.
Even though you're using WiFi, you're still communicating via the BlackBerry infrastructure.

Question Bold 9000 Gmail App needs Carrier connection to work. Wifi-only impossible.

This is a thread for users of the Bold 9000. Your profile shows your handset is an 8700. Can you confirm what you're using?

On my Bold with the latest OS and latest version of Gmail application, I need to have my Rogers connection turned on. Gmail will not work strictly over wifi.

This is also the case for the Facebook application. I've found that using the web-browser equivalent's allows me to get around having to pay Rogers to access my web-data.

Poynt also requires a data connection and so does Google Maps.

Email, Web browser, and IM (BB, Google Talk, Windows Live Messenger) will work using strictly wifi.

Well - go to my site and find links of interest. Not for the weak see the one on Service Book Installation. You don't need BIS or BES to get gmail, but you need friends and some skill.
