Default Bold Backup Failure

Please Login to Remove!

When I perform a backup (using DM v. 4.6), it freezes on the Address Book - All Database. If I try without this database selected, it fails on Messages. The Profiles Database also causes a failure. The failure of the Profiles database happens on every computer. The other failures only occur when I connect to XP running in a Parallels v.4.0 Virtual Machine on a Mac.

Does anyone have any idea why backups freeze on some databases. The issue I have with Profiles has plagued me for years (and follows me from device to device). It even happens with unmodified profiles.

I would really like to get this problem solved and need some experts to give some advice and make some suggestions.

Thanks.

Very simular problem here. I get a pop up that says failed. I've searched several times and found several suggesitons but none worked.

I'm afraid to update the OS because I fear it won't back up and I'll loose all my 3rd party apps.

Somewhere your databases are corrupt. I would try to clean up your databases. How - make sure you can sync with something for your addresses etc that you really need and then wipe the BB and start over. Make sure you have all your application activation codes.

I am on a BES and have tried this advice. The Profiles database is the only one that consistently causes a problem. But since I do not have access to the BES (it is hosted on Mailstreet), I cannot delete the Profile Database and prevent it from "coming back" when I do the Enterprise Activation. And (also because I am on a BES), I cannot restore a "clean" Profiles database.

The other databases I mentioned in my original post only fail when I try to backup under Parallels on a Mac. When I use a PC, or Vm Ware Fusion on the Mac, it works fine (except Profiles).

How can I get a Clean Profiles database and prevent my corrupted one from being restored when I do an Enterprise Activation?

First I would check to see if you have the Wall Street Journal Reader installed. The WSJ is known to create the failures you indicated. The only way I was able to solve the problem was to remove WSJ and wipe the BB - just removing WSJ won't do it. I am on BES and have no enterprise activation problems and no further issues (assuming you removed WSJ). Unfortunately you will then have to reinstall your third party apps (but do not reinstall WSJ).

I was just going to say the same thing!! I have only had to do this once though. All other backup attempts have been successful.

same thing with me, I have to clear my Browser Cache. Most of the time after a failed attempt I can just go to advance back-up and select everything and it works without clearing Browser Cache

I have the same issue. 4.7 of the Desktop Manager has the same results. It always fails on the Profiles step of the back up.

Backup error

I have noticed that several 3rd party apps have entries in the Profiles properties. It's possible that one of these property entries may not be "compatible" for lack of a better term and are non-standard in their implementation. The apps that I have on the device that have "extra" entries are:

1) WSJ
2) GMail
3) ToDo Matrix
4) TwitterBerry
5) Facebook
6) AP Mobile News

I'm going to proceed with the tedious task of removing these one at a time to see if I can't get past the Profile hang during my backup and report back here. I'd be curious from anyone in this community, if they a) have had a successful back and b) if you had a successful backup with any of the above listed 3rd party apps installed on their device.

Seems I got lucky on the first try. After removing the Wall Street Journal app, I was able to perform a full backup from Desktop Manager. First time with this device. To confirm the finding, I'm going to reinstall WSJ and see if the backup fails on the Profiles portion of the backup.

When back-up fails, choose a previous restore file, even an old one, restore the unit and try back-up until it works. You will loose applications that you can re-install, but not personal data, contacts, connection entries, etc.

In my case that wouldn't have worked as I wasn't able to perform a successful back up with this device. As noted above, after removing the WSJ mobile app, I was able to perform a backup. I reinstalled the WSJ mobile app afterwards and went to perform another backup and strangely, was able to perform the backup. The only thing I can think of is that index location of the Profile property for the WSJ app was in a different location in the Profiles database and with the newer version of WSJ mobile (1.1.7), the DB record was written out properly? Dunno.

My issue is that, using DM 4.6, the backup always stalls on the last step--"backing up onboard device memory". I get a valid backup file, but have to manually cancel the backup after a few minutes.

I am using a Fusion VM on an iMac, but it has always worked before, as well.

I have cleared the Browser cache and do not have WSJ reader installed.

This just started a couple days ago, but haven't installed anything new except Roblock, and I had that on the Bold before without any problems.

There is about 34 MB free space in app memory.

Any ideas?

Wondering if you ever found a way around your issue? I have the exact same thing happening, stops at "Backing up on-board device memory...". I don't know if I have a valid backup or not.

No, I never found a workaround, other than to not check the memory backup, and then it runs smoothly. I don't know what it isn't backing up, but it does back up the data completely.

I got the same issue but cannot solve it by clearing browser cache :( When I try to do manual backup, I get an error at attachment options & data.. Is there a way to delete that??
