In area's where I lose total network coverage (IE: inside the house), after a brief "searching for network" display my bold starts showing "SOS". When I then go outside where I know I get coverage, it still remains on "SOS".

If I turn off (and then back on) the radio network, then it searches for network and reconnects fine. What is the story with "SOS"? Is there a setting, or what is the default time until the phone searches for a network after being in the "SOS" mode?

One other issue appeared in the back of a Starbucks the other day. I had no network coverage, but a good WiFi signal from Starbucks. When I tried to visit a website, the browser said that I had no connection, try again later. This was odd. It was as if I couldn't use WiFi unless I also had a network connection. Is this right?

I believe this may be related to your SIM card. I got SOS quite a bit when my SIM kept getting unseated.

When I've had this I toggled the radio on/off and sometimes that did it. Other times I needed to do a battery pull.

SOS means that it can see towers and communicate but it can't talk to the provider or see the provider that is in relation to your SIM information or can't read the SIM information. This meas that you can make emergency calls only that the cell tower provider will establish for you and no carrier is required.

Could this have anything to do with the fact that the phone is registered (and the sim info) across the country in another state? It spends half the time in Alabama and half the time in Los Angeles. Is perpetual roam causing it?

No, it's not roaming unless it breaks AT&T's network. As long as you're in AT&T's network your device is local.

I'm not sure to be honest. It should never do it in my opinion unless your carrier can't be contacted by the cell tower or your device can't read the SIM. I would call your provider and ask them to diagnose the problem as there could be network issues causing this.

Also on a side not have you upgraded to the latest OS from your provider?

When you upgrade, all your 3rd party apps, and the data therein will remain intact...

Desktop manager will backup your device for the upgrade. I would recommend sticking with the most current by your provider as .190 might not be tested by your carrier. If .167 is the most current by AT&T then might be worth the .190 install

I just looked and it seems that Applications: 4.6.0.167 is the most current for AT&T so you might want to venture to the .190

I work for an att dealer and the bold is having problems. Just got an e-mail about this

Issue: Customer with Bold, and now other devices are getting "SIM NOT PROVISIONED" or "SIM NOT ALLOWED" or SOS ONLY



Status: The issue is currently under investigation. A priority one call has been in effect for the past 24 hours and will continue until the issue is resolved.



Action: DO NOT process equipment exchanges for customers with these symptoms if at all possible. The device in most cases is not defective.

For new activations, set customers expectation that we are currently experiencing a temporary issue and that there phone may experience the above problem. The customer can try to soft reset a smart phone by removing the battery while the device is on then reassembling and powering on the device. Sometimes this will restore the service even if only temporarily. This is not recommended for all other devices as it may damage the equipment.
For existing customers, set customers expectation that we are experiencing a temporary issue and follow the same process above.

It is network wide as far as I know

But, is it sporatic?? How come no one else is having this issue?

I've got four Bold's. Two on the original AT&T 4.6.0.167 and two on 4.6.0.185. The 167 Bold's are experiencing the SOS issue. 185 doesn't have this issues at all.. Upgrade and you should be fine. I'm updating another one right now, but this time to 4.6.0.190.

I have a .167 AT&T Bold, and it too has been doing the "SOS" thing since I got it new. About once a week or so, if I go into a non-coverage area, it will go into "SOS" mode, which I take to mean "no signal avail," and then will continue to display SOS even when I am in a good coverage area. A reboot will fix it and my emails come flooding in all at once.

I had this problem with earlier OS versions. Since I upgraded to .190 I've not seen it once.

Had same issue. It is 167 issue for sure. They replaced my bold which now has 126 version and all is well.

check to see if the sim card is inserted the right way...
