I use Any Video Converter. It's free. Just Google it and download. I generally convert my ripped DVD's to the MPEG-4 Mobile format. They have various options including MPEG-4 (regular) but I use the MPEG-4 Mobile format. Videos convert quite fast (15-20 minutes per hour of video) and play really well on the Bold, no issues with sound, etc.

Default Magic DVD Ripper

I'm having great luck with Magic DVD Ripper.. you can specify the exact resolution of output for both 16:9 and 4:3 source material, change volume level, scale or crop to fix selected resolution. No audio sync issues and video looks quite good to me.
