Hey guys, the screen to my Blackberry Bold is broken (doing the tie-dye thing). I guess this isn't covered under the AT&T warranty and I don't have insurance (didn't even know you could for smartphones). Do you all know where the best place to send the phone in and get this fixed online is? I guess I'm looking for the best price that will result in my phone being fixed, of curse. So far, the best I'm looking at is $145 @ Blackberry Bold Repair Parts and Service. Anyone seen better than that?

I hate to break it to you, but this may be an internal issue, not a problem with the LCD. But on the bright side, if it is internal, maybe AT&T will cover that...

i heard that quite a few people had trouble installing the lcd from cnn. Makes me nervous to purchase it from them.

Here's the image. What happened was I went to the AT&T store where I purchased the phone 11/4. At first it seemed that the phone could just be replaced, but they called the AT&T repair center 20 miles away, which said they don't do the Bold yet.
Then, from the AT&T store I was at, I was put on the phone with someone nationally or internationally from AT&T. They said warranty doesn't cover the screen because it's two different shades of black when you turn it off. Everyone I talked to (the folks at the store, RIM) says this is a new exception to them (they said the questions about corrosion, the white dot etc. were common, but they hadn't heard of the two-shade test). Any advice?

The LCD may be broken, but it almost looks like there could be another problem to go along with it. You said that when the LCD is turned off, there is an obvious dark spot?

If you look at the picture above, the area of the screen that's black (when the phone's turned on) is a slightly darker shade of black than usual when the phone's turned off. I wouldn't say it's obvious--you can only see it when you hold it at a certain angle, and I didn't notice it until the person on the phone with AT&T warranty called my attention to it (and then subsequently told me it'd be $500 to fix the phone). But yes--short answer--the screen isn't all one color when you turn it off.

Thanks! As far as installing that though, is that really (as in, really really) the type of thing a novice can do himself. I'm pretty good with gadgets and elctronics, but I've never opened one up before. Please advise

I wouldn't be so quick to assume that this is only an LCD issue. However, I guess you don't have anything to lose so I would go ahead and replace it. Otherwise, maybe try calling tech support and getting replaced? Have you ever dropped the phone or anything?

Oh yeah, I did drop it (sorry, I must've thought that was assumed or thought I had said so already). But--honestly--it fell from about mid-thigh-height to the ground, so roughly two-feet (I'm 5'8"). I really don't think it's reasonable for a phone to not be able to withstand THAT. Hmpf.
