Default Bold setting off store anti-theft alarms

Please Login to Remove!

I've noticed that my AT&T Bold will frequently set off anti-theft alarms when going in/out of certain strores. Target is a particular problem. Anyone else seen this? Any ideas on how to prevent it? My experience is that the store alarm will go off 75% of the time.

I remember another thread about this from a few months ago... not with the Bold, but I'll try to dig it up.

I go in and out of retail stores daily in my work. I was in a Target last night. I've never had this happen to me. I have had my Bold 3 months, and a Pearl for 2 yrs before. Check for a hidden RF sensor in a jacket or other item. Some are hidden, and if not de-activated could be the problem.
Good luck.

I manage a retail store and Very regularily people set off the alarm (when entering) and tell me "oh that's just my cell phone it does that all the time". I always tell them that it is not their phone. They insist it is. When I use my portable desensitizer on them and their belongings it is Never their phone. It is always a half demagnetized tag sewn into their belt, their shoe, their hat, their jacket, or something else. Never once has it been a cell phone.

Seems easy enough to verify. Once you are surrounded by security people, have them or a store rep walk thru the anti-theft sensors with the Bold (keep a close eye on them so they don't just keep walking...)

This seems to happen no matter what I'm wearing. To make sure I gave the phone to my wife and then she set off the alarm. I'm getting tired of it.. I dont even bother to stop anymore when they go off.

I have been one of those people. For me, (not saying the Op is wrong in the least) it has always been something other than my phone.

It's interesting you mention "Target is a particular problem.."..I assume the tags are RFID, but not sure. Could simply be, the (shoddy) design of the model/manufacturer of the anti-theft system that Target uses.

It's not just Target but I seem to go to Target stores fairly often so that's why I mentioned it.

This doesn't seem to be a common problem from what I've read.
I think I'll just call AT&T and ask for a replacement. Thanks for the tips everyone.
