Default Profiles keep resetting

Please Login to Remove!

Last night I installed a theme via DM, and when the device rebooted, two of my custom profiles were still there, but all the settings were defaults (the profile named "work" was there, but all custom sounds were not). So I tried to restore from that mornings back up. I transferred over only the profiles and options - no dice. Names, no settings.

So I spent last night setting both back up, no big deal.

This morning, I removed an app from the phone (from Advanced Options, Apps, delete), and after the device rebooted, both of my custom profiles were missing - not even the names were there (I noticed because this morning I had the "work" profile set - no sounds or vibrate for anything but calls, which vibrate only. Then I removed the app, and it reset, and I hadn't used the phone since then. and then my phone scared the crap out of me by ringing quite loud.)

Is this common? Bold on at&t, 4.6.0.216, DM 4.7, and 49.2mb free on the phone (from Options -> Memory)

Oh, and all the sounds are system sounds, so none of them are on the media card.

Thanks in advance.

That's weird, I have read many posts by folks using .216 and not one that I recall complained about this. In fact most revert back to it after trying others.

Maybe, you should try to re-load it or get your hands on a newer version; I have been using .228 for over a week now without any issues (that I have found yet).

Not that I think it matters, but it may be a clue to someone else; what app and theme are you speaking of.

The initial theme I installed was Streamline, found here in the media section. I couldn't get it to work right, so I uninstalled it, also via DM.

The app I deleted this morning was the WSJ Mobile Edition.

I'm currently using the stock Precision Silver theme.

I know beta OS posts aren't allowed in the forum. Could you PM me a link? Perhaps I'll try .228 tonight. How's the battery life on it?

I have found that generally, deleting applications from the handheld (Menu, Delete) which have "injected themselves" into your Profiles have a higher chance of corrupting the Profiles databases than when the application is removed using Desktop Manager.

By "injected themselves", I mean applications which create an entry into each of your profiles; e.g. Viigo, BB Alerts, PeekAWho, Weatherbug, JiveTalk, etc. I am not saying that any of these applications are at fault in any way, I am just illustrating applications that create line entries in your Profiles.

When you delete an application, the line entry for that application in Profiles has to be removed too.

Another cause for the hosing of Profiles is deleting/renaming/moving ringtones on your SD Card that you have set to be used by your Profiles. A Profile or two may be pointing at the [now] non-existant ringtone file. However, I have found that in this case, the Profiles database does not corrupt immediately (possibly because it does not verify the existance of the file until it is time to be used), but it may happen later down the road. Somewhat related might be when your handheld is connected to your PC via USB while the SD Card is in Mass Storage Mode, and then you get a telephone call which uses a ringtone which the handheld cannot access while in Mass Storage Mode. Since that could be, technically percieved by the handheld OS, as a problem, the OS might reset the Profiles to Default settings (which of course use all internal notification sounds and ringtones).

The above is based on observation and theory, not knowledge base articles, faq's or postings by others. Sounds plausible anyways.

I should have mentioned as well that unistalling via the DM performs a cleaner/safer uninstall.

If you Google "Leaked Blackberry Bold OS 4.6.0.228" you will likely find in the first couple of hits.

apparently there's a .234 now? I'll try that one instead

But, I don't get why even after restoring the profile and profile options from a backup to the device didn't restore the settings, especially since the sounds were not on a media card.

Well that's basically why I am suggesting to reload or upgrade; something may have gotten messed up.

And yes I too am downloading .234.
