I'm ditching my iPhone and going to the bold. I do have one question. I have been reading around the forum but i dont think i really got a clear answer. What is the difference between AT&T's Bold and an unlocked Bold?

Nothing.

The only difference is with an unlocked Bold, be it branded to ATT or Rogers or whoever, it is usable on other GSM carrier networks with their SIM card in it.

The AT&T Bold will not let you turn off 3G and operate only in 2G/EDGE. All others will allow this. In fringe areas it can save battery life, and some folks report dropped calls when the Bold is switching between 3G and 2G.

You're right, it's much better and can do much more than an iPhone.

Okay here is the low down:

1. Unlocked GSM devices can be used with other GSM carriers
2. Certain locked features like GPS can be used on other carriers that support it (some carriers make you pay a subscription fee to use the GPS)
3. Do be aware that if you like your battery life don't buy an unlocked AT&T because you will have to illegally hack it to get the 2G option. Not for the technically challenged.
4. No upgrading your OS will not lock your phone again you can use any carrier's OS as long as its is for your model.

Keep these 3 things in mind when looking for one and you should be good. There are other minor points but these are the major ones to focus on.
