Default HELP! Problems downgrading OS

Please Login to Remove!

I am trying to downgrade from .216 to .190 and have done OS upgrades many times before without any problems. I deleted old OS's on my computer and re-started computer. Then went through the motions and it is not detecting an OS to download. I went in and deleted the vendor file and all but still nothing.

I tried both from the desktop manager and from the same menu as the vendor file. Usually it prompts for the OS change.

Any ideas?

Have you "removed" the newer OS versions via Control Panel > Add/Remove Progs?

If you just delete the old OSs, the registry can still that they were installed... and no go.

Well after following all the above advice and spending hours trying to put this OS on I have come to the conclusion that .190 has obviously gone to shit and won't load. I tried using the one from AVEA. Is there a link that anyone can provide to a different carriers .190 that actually will load? Right now I am stuck with a useless piece of crap that doesn't even have an OS on it now and am missing business calls and e-mails. This is rediculuos.

Get any OS on the device... for now.
Download the latest beta and get it on there.

Agreed here. The newest .234 is SUPER stable and works beautifully! You won't regret it. And maybe just to be safe, uninstall Desktop Manager and reinstall that as well.

^^Cosigned. I thought .210 was the best thing since sliced bread until I went to .234.

When you start up DM with the device connected, is the computer even recognizing your Bold? (Device connected w/ PIN number in the lower left hand corner) If not, there is your problem. You may want to take a look here if that is the case.

I have tried this, and still no luck. The only way I can download an OS on it is to go to blackberry.com/upgrades and it auto picks the Rogers .162 one and installs it auto. There is ABSOLUTELY NO way that the desktop manager will recognize a OS for install. Yes, I deleted the vendor file. I have deleted and re-loaded desktop manager and still no go. Not really sure where else to go with this besides returning the Bold as a defective unit.

The only other thing I can suggest is to try reinstalling the BlackBerry USB and Modem drivers for your version of DM. If you've already done everything else, you may have explored this avenue. It's worth a shot before you return the device if you haven't though.

When I screw my bold up, to the point of just a red light only, I go with BlackBerry Master Control Program. I usually have to restart my laptop though because the drivers for the "blackberry smartphone" hang. Once it's restarted, I plug it back in. Windows installs the drivers. Then I use BlackBerry Master Control Program to install the OS. It doesn't back anything up but at this point, there's nothing to back up anyways. Even if the PIN isn't readable, it will display USB:UNKNOWN. It is still able to connect to the boot rom of the phone and do its thing to fix it up.

I am thinking that I must be missing something somewhere. I have done OS changes for a number of years with no problems. When I load desktop manager it doesn't even recognize that there is a new OS and says that the software is up to date.

Try uninstalling everything; desktop manager and the os builds from the control panel.
Open REGEDIT and search through for anything with "RIM" "Research In Motion" & "Blackberry" and delete those keys.
Delete any Research In Motion folders from "C:\Program Files" and also "C:\Program Files\Common Files"

This should clear any remnants of the software off your desktop. Reboot your desktop and start from scratch. Install Desktop Manager 4.6! 4.7 has given me nothing but trouble and "bricking" my phone each time. I've read lots of badness about it too.

Then install the newest Beta .234 (It's the best right now, as said above). Open the desktop manager, then plug in your Bold. Give that a go.

i had the opposite problem. I was trying to upgrade to .234 from .216, and it downgraded me to .197. What eventually worked was uninstalling the blackberry os from the computer, restart computer, reinstall blackberry os, restart computer, and then wiped the bold with jl_cmdr, and reloaded .234.

I'm not sure if that second restart was necessary, but i didn't want to chance it.

your best bet is probably removing everything and reinstalling it all.

upgrade to .216 from .234? .234 although beta, is higher than .216 and would be a downgrade.

My guess is that you have other vendor.xml files on the computer. This happens when you use DM 4.7 and it's auto-update feature. Do a search on your PC for vendor.xml (be sure and include hidden files and folders) then delete ALL vendor.xml files.

Then install the OS you want (any version, doesn't matter but be sure and delete the vendor.xml file again) and use Loader.exe found in c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader to load the OS to your device. If you're downgrading just make sure that any later OS are removed using add/remove programs in Control Panel.

I truly hate when people suggest JL_Cmder when an OS won't load. JL_Cmder is the most overused application I know of. I rarely ever use it. The only time it's necessary is if the device won't respond and is already not functional. If the device is functional and JL_Cmder is used to try and get an OS loaded it will be a waste of time and you end up with a useless device and the OS will STILL not load.

That worked like a charm, thank you! I thought I was going to lose my mind. There were a couple hidden vendor.xml files on the computer. Now that I am on a roll, can someone send me a PM with the link to this new beta OS that is apparently better than .190? I understand that we aren't supposed to post stuff like that.
Thanks again all!
