Question Storage device not showing in MY COMPUTER

Please Login to Remove!

I just got my replacement bold.

When i connect my new bold to my laptop through USB, I am not able to see the Device Memory storage or the MicroSD storage when I open "My Computer" in Windows.

What is the problem and can someone help me please?

I used to be able to see them in my old bold.

Also, When I open DESKTOP MANAGER and try to use the BLACKBERRY MEDA SYNC on my new bold, it returns an ERROR saying "CANNOT CONNECT TO BOLD, RETRY OR CANCEL." What's up with that??

WHen i plus my old bold in, it automatically recognizes it. Any solutions on either one of these issues??

PLEASE HELP!

THanks ahead of time.

Do you have Mass Storage Mode enabled?

Options > Media card > Mass Storage Mode Support = Yes?
Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connected = Yes?

We just got 4 refurb bolds from att, all stock os and they're all doing this. Mine worked fine when I got it, and I updated to os 216/183 and it still does it. Seems like something changed with the mass storage mode? I'm going to call our ETS tomorrow and see what they have to offer. Kinda wierd I have four devices all doing same thing. I did test one with media manager and it sees the device memory and card, didn't test the others as the user needed their device and sd card back heh

Check your drive mappings in device manager, it is possible that the drive letter that the computer assigned to the card or BB is already being used by something else.

For example - you have an external hard drive connected via USB and it is assigned the F: drive. Then when you hook up the BB it is trying to assign it to F: , but is it already being used. Windows will not pick a different drive letter, you have to manually change the drive mapping, like Z: . Then everytime you connect the device it will come up as Z: and you can see it in Explorer or My Computer.

just talked to AT&T and then got connected to some tier 2 techies at RIM for a couple hours (f'ing tired from all the hoop jumpin).

They said it is a defected product because having windows recognize the device memory and sd card is a basic basic component.

Any computer OS should recognize them as a thumb/flash drive when mass storage is turned on and it should automatically show up.

That is also the reason the media sync is not working because it is unable to map itself to those storage devices and sync.

They are sending me a new (correction - REFURBISHED) BOLD...we'll see what happens....

I've double checked the drive mappings with the other three devices so far, not even seeing the drives in there. When I use media manager the internal and sd card show up. The devices have mass storage mode set to on, and even changing the options to off/on/prompt/etc are not working

I find it hard to believe that of the five bolds we've gotten, four of them (oddly enough the refurbed, mine was purchased new as there were no refurb offerings) are bad? I've even gone as far as wiping one device with javaloader and reinstalling the os from ATTs site, as well as the orange uk os and even the newest one posted here in the forum. All are the same result. I checked the bes, we don't force any policy settings, so nothing is being pushed from our end onto the unit. I still need to call att ets or I suppose I could call our rim t support and see what they say

I just checked something, the user I was setting this bold up for (one of the refurbs) has tethering, and it's not seeing it in the communication manager.

The device memory and SD card are seen in the media manager so I know that works, I can play the music on the device, etc.

I checked the Device Manager of the pc and under Hardware under Universal Serial Bus Controllers theres a Blackberry Smartphone listed. I right-clicked and uninstalled, then plugged the phone back in. I get the baloon pop-up that it's finding it, but nothing about the drives.

The unit is getting a charge, I am able to backup and restore to/from the device, but now media manager won't see it, nor will the memory show up as mass storage mode in windows.

I knwo the guys card works as I put it in my device and it comes up just fine.

This device was upgraded to 216 os and it's still getting the issues. The other one I reverted back to the factory installed OS (downloaded from ATT site .167) and it did the same thing, so it doesn't appear to be os dependant.

The only thing that sets these devices apart from mine is they're refurbs, whereas mine was new.

yeah, they are defected products i would say. I am having the exacctt same issues as you.

i talked to rim tech supprot for hours and thats what conclusion they arrived at as well.

basically when mass storage mode is on, the internal device memory as well as any sd card should show up on any computer os (vista, xp, mac, etc) because the storage devices are basically seen as FLASH or THUMB drives.

if this is not occuring, there is definitely a problem with the product and it needs to be replaced. THe drives should show up in MY COMPUTER and this is a basic component of the phone, it does not require any other resources from the PC or the Device, so there is a defect. Only time you may not see this is when u have a BES and firewall settings may be in place, then there be voluntary changes in the policy preventing those features.
And the reason MEDIA SYNC does not work is because it does not see the drives.

I am para-phrasing, but thats basically what they said.

Replace the phones out, i know you already been through 5 and i hope i don't have to do that, but I would say thats the best idea at this time.

Good luck. Patiently waiting for my replacement bold....

I got the batch file and it worked, but I wonder if it's something they're not doing (or are doing?) when they "refurb" the devices?

We figured we'ld save $50 a pop getting the refurbed, our cost on them is $249 vs $299, and after 5-6 devices, we've saved money. But in the end the headache just isn't worth it.

Not to mention that two of the devices we've sent back before we even took them out to get them setup. One the bezel along the bottom where the battery door is was all scratched up and the silver was rubbing off (could see the black underneath), and the other had a big "spot" as best I could describe on the screen that was visible even when the unit was on or off. It appeared to be under the screen and nothing we could wipe off.

I'm calling our RIM T-Support and our ATT ETS Support and we'll see what direction I get from them both.

Default drive letters not showing up

I have a similar problem but it is not on a refurbished phone:

As the topic says, my drive letters are not showing up.

When I connect my Blackberry Storm to my computer via the USB I cannot "see" the D and F drives. The D being the internal memory and the F being the media card. I know they exist because I can "see" them when I double click on the icon in the system tray and click properties I see the D and F "generic" drives. Further, I cannot copy documents to either of these drives because I cannot see them. I can see them in the Device Manager for XP but I cannot get access to them. I have disabled them and then enabled them to no avail.

Does anyone know what may be the problem but more importantly, how do I fix it? Any help would be most appreciated.

Thanks very much.
Russ
