Hey, im new to all this and my Bold. and i dont know what the hell im doing lol. i tried installing this new update. i donloaded and extracted the file. then i deleted that vendor file and ran the loader application. all it seemed to do was backup my files. and it was asking about adding or removing apps. i tried to add the .exe file from the download to the app list but i kept getting errors. so i tried running the .exe file itself. it installed on my computer but nothing happened. i have no idea what im doing here. and my bold still says its running version 167....

Welcome to the forums.

When it asked about adding apps, were they apps for the BlackBerry, such as BBMaps, Docs to Go, etc?

That's normal. Put a check next to what applications you want installed on your device and follow the prompts. You should be good to go then

When you click on the loader.exe file, it is a wizard. Follow the steps in the wizard. At which point are you getting stuck?

i did that, and all it talks about are apps, nothing about the OS system file. i ran through the whole wizard and at the end my bold still says its using version 167. also, it says in the first post of this thread that the bold should reset once or twice during the install. mine ever reset at all.

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.
There are the steps. I've loaded many of OS's and never had an issue with it not loading.

Check add/remove programs and verify which version you have loaded. Also search your entire PC for vendor.xml to verify all instances have been removed.

Relax. What is the device showing?

Try rebooting the PC and the device, and try again. Also, make sure you're connecting the device directly into a USB port on the PC, not a hub.

the device turned off and had a blinking red light. after removing the battery, it still did the same thing. then like the third time around it rebooted. everythings still on there but its running really slow. and now when i try running loader.exe it says its unable to connect to the device. im going to try rebooting the PC now, ill be back in a few.

yeah me2. i really hope this helps my battery life. ive had this thing for like 2 weeks and im already on my second battery. it sux just as bad as the first too :/ i mean, getting 24 hours of battery life sux apparently compared to traditional standards, but id be perfectly happy with that. 4-5 hour battery life though? NO WAY! lol, thats how bad its been for me. and hoestly i barely use the phone. today i woke up at 1pm (it charged all night). i spet about 10-15min on the phone, sent 4-5 TXTs and went on the internet for about 1min. i keep wi-fi off, BT off, let the phone run on 3G. and i use the holster that shuts the screen off. today, it was in that holster 99% of the day. by 6pm today, it was at half battery life. thats utterly ridiculous considering how infrequently ive used it. i read a thread on here that said if your wallpaper is saved to your microSD card it can eat battery. so i switch the wallpaper to the phones memory and did this update. i REALLY hope i get a huge jump in battery life now...

3G eats battery life for breakfast. I've heard the wall paper trick as well.

Try some of these steps : Maximum Battery Life - BlackBerryFAQ

Hopefully they can help too.

Not a big deal, but I've noticed the last 2 updates I did (.216 to .221 and now to .224), my BlackberryMessenger alert had reset itself to mute (for profile Normal) and I had to go fix that and set it back to the chime I prefer. All my other alerts and profiles, etc. weren't touched, just BBM for Normal profile. I didn't notice it for a couple of days after the update each time, but now I'll know to go check it after I update next time.

Oh, well I am corrected. The only way Ive read about it is to download the file, load via DM/loader.exe
I wasn't aware OTA was possible.

Since it's been a few days, anyone have a general consensus on how this performs (3G signal, battery life, stability, etc) vs .221 which was released just a bit earlier than this OS? Debating if I want to upgrade again.

I tried that version when I first got my Bold from AT&T back in December 2008...for me the battery life was really bad. After I upgraded to .190 battery life issue was resolved.

That was my biggest reason for upgrading.

I have had .224 running a couple of days.
The good news is that 3g grabbing is the best yet. Better than .221, which I think was not quire as good as .216 (that is why I went for .224 after only a week on .221).
The bad: Memory usage seems worse than .221, from reboot to now, after 2 days. I am now at less than 22 megs!.
after a battery pull, 34 megs, which seems about 5 megs less than I was getting from earlier OS's. Voice dialling will not work ("unable to allocate memory. Close other applications and try again").
I have upgraded the OS 6 - 7 times since getting the Bold in late August without a problem. For some reason, on this update, it choked near the end with data restore and froze. To continue the process, I had to do a battery pull. All programs restored, but PocketDay lost all its settings. I am wondering if the interruption in OS upgrade has left unused or unrecognized data on my Bold which is taking up memory?
The result is that I have less available memory than .167, which was, in my experience the previous worst memory usage. However, I have not heard of others having memory problems on .224, so it may be my problem on the OS upgrade.
Battery life seems avarage. I force it to do 3g only. I also have wifi on for when I am at home. With moderate use over 24 hours it is 60%.
Reboot time with this OS and .221 fairly fast. Much better than .216, which seemed longer, by far than any other OS.

I am with Rogers on BES and have been re-activated (usually) automatically after OS upgrades. I originally had an OS prior to .162 and have upgraded seven times, including the upgrade to .162 and to and including .224.
The only time I had to ask our IT people to get a new password and get reactivated was when I used the loader.exe file as instructed at the start of this thread.
For me what works in getting reactivated automatically is to first install Blackberry Desktop Manager 4.6 on your office computer (where the BES is located) and on the installation, indicate that your Blackberry is connected via the enterprise server.
Do not have Desktop Manager running. Follow the instructions at the start of this thread for downloading and installing the new OS (on your office computer), but instead of starting loader.exe start Desktop Manager. It will ask for your Blackberry password and connect to your Blackberry, check to see if there is a later OS available, ask you if you want to upgrade, follow the instructions and you should be OK. At the end of the backup, upgrade and restore, you should notice that there are a whole lot of data related to BES being re-initialized. The re-initialization process can take some time.
After reiniatiliazation, you may want to do a battery pull to do a hard reboot.
It has worked for me, but it is possible that your IT people have the BES configured differently to provide more security and restrict OS upgrades.

My .02. I have had the new O/S the last couple of days. My biggest issue with previous O/S was battery life. We all know that battery life is dependent on multiple factors, so I won't bother listing my specific items. What I will say is this. My experience has been fantastic. I have doubled my battery life with how I use it. Plus, the upgrade fixed a thumbnail item I saw with my pictures when I last upgraded. Good stuff from me.

I'm actually lost...

After using this OS for a while, I'm going back to 190. Battery life is horrible (1/5 bars left after a day or normal usage, usually 3/5 left in .190). Memory leak is pretty bad as well, with 21.2mb free at the end of the day (usually 30-35mb free on .190). My phone has also been bouncing back to EDGE multiple times a day. I'll go with .190 and and just wait for AT&T to release their new version with Visual Voicemail.

If I install this upgrade, will I loose the themes etc that I have already downloaded into the phone or will they be backed up and still be on there after the upgrade?

Thanks

Is there a list of all the previous OS versions somewhere available? I'm aware of the BB support site, but you have to browse through all the different providers to see what their OS versions are. A list of all the previous OS versions from .136 through .343 (I think that is the latest) would be great if you want to try different OS versions.
