OS: 9000 4.6.0.378 / 4.6.0.224 (East Asian + English) -
02-27-2009, 09:51 PM
BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.0.378 from DoCoMo
(Contains English)
This OS will load to ANY carrier's 9000 model by following the instructions below.
Package Version: 4.6.0.378
Consisting of:
* Applications: 4.6.0.224
* Software Platform: 4.0.0.187
* File name: 9000jEastAsia_PBr4.6.0_rel378_PL4.0.0.187_A4.6.0.2 24.exe
* File size: 97.3MB
(This download is a zipfile and will decompress to the .exe file stated above)
Download here: http://smartphone.nttdocomo.co.jp/fa...old_460224.zip
1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.
The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

So I don't have to uninstall the older OS i have installed for it on my machine first, just install the newer one and it will automatically know to update that one, after I delete the vendor.xml file?

Yes sir.
I rarely uninstall an older OS until I feel the new one is up and running. If you wanted to downgrade back to the most recent OS, just uninstall the newer OS from your PC Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs.

It looks like this OS was released by a carrier in Japan. Any chance that the OS was related to the recall there?

The recall had to do with the devices themselves, not the OS.

No. The device was recalled, not the OS.
This OS release has been floating around in beta with no issues reported.

Anybody try this versus .221? Just wondering if it's worth upgrading again, since it's only been a week since I installed .221.

This installation is not usual in a sense that it replaced the previous files that I had of 4.6.0.216 (4.0.0.183) versus creating it's own folder.
Can we confirm that this installation is an official installation because it's behaviour is quite different than others.

Okay, so after 24 hours about that anyways with this firmware I must say I'm very impressed, Battery life hasn't moved, MOODIO hasn't cut out on me, the speed is great, wifi is fast, Minimal memory lag, with .221 I went down to 25-30mb by days end, right now I'm at 40mb and it's been going since 5 am, and thats with browsing, MOODIO, bb messenger, texting, calling and a hand full of emails.

One thing I noticed is that when you go into"memory cleaning" it is turned on and you cannot change it.

Very smooth installation. Wierd thing happened after install. Couldn't use "alt" key except sometimes "alt" w/left shift. Then battery removed, etc. and all was ok. Never heard of that before, but it was only a temporary problem. Otherwise, very nice OS upgrade. A positive thing I noticed this time... Positions of icons on my themes weren't all reset like every other OS upgrade. Anyone else notice that?

Been running it since this morning..Almost to no lag at all, good Power usage, actually (no lie) only saw the wating timer once while loading a picture..which usally on 241 I would be it more often..worth the upgrade and best of all not a beta..no font issue with themes

Interresting. This is the first OS file upgrade that I have downloaded where the link is not to the official RIM website. If it is "official" why is it not from the RIM website?

Potentially dumb question, but is there any way to upgrade the software OTA? I don't sync my BB with a PC (use MobiCal). What are my options if I want to upgrade the OS?

If I wanted to downloaded OS's for my carrier, I don't get an official RIM page either. I get my carrier's BB support page. The OS's on there are still official, but my carrier likes having their own download page.
This is the same.

No. The way the OS's are implemented, OTA is not a viable way of upgrading.
You would need to install Blackberry Desktop Manager to upgrade the OS.

REALLY - this is one of the biggest features of os 4.6 and 4.7 - it just takes a really long time to do it and likely requires carrier support.

Thanks, so does anyone know (before I waste a trip there) if it's possible to get AT&T to do it for me? I just hate the idea of really screwing up my phone. There's gotta be some option for people like me who don't have PCs (I do have a Mac!)

Well I have not asked nor do I know if a local AT&T store would do this for you. I know that there offical download site does not offer a download higher than version .167 and since I have higher than that I only get a "NO updates available message on my phone."

Thanks so much. I prefer to stick with the "official" version. I wish I could be as adventurous as some of you on here, but I'm just too chicken. I have too much time invested in my Bold set up. I've compromised my relationship, friends, attention in meetings, and even personal hygiene to get it to where I like it. Don't want to risk it

Updating with a non-AT&T OS is exactly the same, in both procedure and results, as using an AT&T OS. You just delete the Vendor.xml file before starting the install. That dopey file is there only to prevent using an OS not released by your original carrier. Silly really, and totally useless.
I found .167 to be awful. Bad memory and battery management, unstable, and laggy.

Yes, upgrading your OS breaks the connection with the BES. You will need to reactivate after wards.
