Exclamation Accessing Emails using Wi-Fi instead of Blackberry Service/Edge While Roaming

Please Login to Remove!

Hi all!

I have a query regarding using my blackberry bold to access my email on the configured email accounts using Wi-Fi instead of using the Edge/GPRS Service whilst roaming.

The reasoning is pretty simple. I dont know how many blackberry users have faced inflated phone bills simply because they were using their blackberries to check/receive email whilst roaming inside or outside their home countries.

My BB Bold has an option to "turn off" data services whilst roaming but when I do so, inspite of the wifi service being activated, i am unable to download mail on the different email accounts setup on the phone.

Is there a way i can turn off "data services" or "edge/gprs" but still use wifi to access my email whilst roaming?

Many thanks!

Cheers

Two suggestions:

1. Turn of data while roaming as you do, until you are in WiFi coverage. Then turn the GPRS radio off and data on. This will force data to flow over the WiFi connection to your Rim Operations Centre avoiding on-air and roaming charges. You will have to wait a short while until the BIS or BES realizes you are available and pushes your mail to you.

2. Have a look at LogicMail for Blackberry. This is an IMAP client for Blackberry that can read your mail out of your server IMAP folders, and send mail out via SMTP. It will use WiFi if you want it to. I don't know if it will work with data service turned of, but if it is using WiFi it may.

What is the way to turn the "GPRS" radio off whilst still maintaing the cellular radio to be on?. I tried going to Options>Mobile Network>Data and selecting the "Off when roaming" or "Off" options. When I do this and activate my Wi-Fi, inspite of my wi-fi signal being strong and link showing "Connected", I am unable to browse the internet or download email.

Is there a setting I may have missed?. Please advise?

Thanks.

Erm connect to wi-fi first, then turn off the mobile network, but make sure that data is still yes before you do.
I don't know how it works, but I think this is the way it does.
