So I am kinda confused. When I look at my devices memory I have about 800mb of memory. Now when I look at application memory I have 27.3 I think now after I uninstalled a few apps and then did a battery pull. But this is only with a few apps installed. Others have a lot of apps installed I am talking around 30. So how come that I tried to install a new app I got a memory low error, but others can have so many apps installled. Is there somthing that I am missing. Any help would be great. Thanks

BlackBerry 9000 V4.6.0.167 (Platform 4.0.0.157)

No pictures. Only 2 small 350kb Mp3 (Used as ring tones)

I think 56 contacts.
Decent amount of the calendar (but not alot)

Also currently no SD card. I did not see a need for one since i had over 800MB of free space. Thats why i am kinda confused why its telling me not enough space.

Schu, I'm in the same ship. I just got my Bold Saturday and I downloaded 4 apps from the app store, Pandora, GTalk, Google Maps and Qik. Now I can't download anymore apps b/c it says I have no memory left! I have a few mp3s, 5 small pics, a few calendar entries and like 30 contacts. I have at 766mb left in the Bold's memory - so wtf? I'm using V4.6.0.167 (Platform 4.0.0.157), same as you. Can anyone help?? I know you should be able to put more than 4 apps on a Bold...ughhh...

it is the app memory which controls whether you have room for applications.
try a battery pull and see how much it frees up.
make sure you click menu-close on googles maps as using the escape key to close does not work with that.
clean browser cache, outboxes and inboxes of messages you dont need.

Yea, no the only application i ever leave running is Gmail. How much memory is there to start? Like when you get the phone how much memory is there originally. Because i don't have that many apps but feel that my memory is severely gimped.

after the OS is installed, i.e. when you get the phone and before you instal other apps, i think there maybe 40? im not sure.
i have 51MB, with 5 apps installed, but some OS apps (bb messenger, bb maps, tasks, memo pad, extra languages) removed.

Ok, i guess i am going to have to look into it. Also i am hoping that maybe RIM will allow apps to be placed in the flash memory and then after they load they use application memory like ram.

Is this concern over memory really validated? I have assumed that the BB will just take some of the user file space if it needs more "application" memory.

I have never had any messages or issues that I can put down to the BB not having enough application memory, yet I read so many postings from users that notice their app memory is low so do a battery pull. What happens if you stop looking at your available app memory?

Then messages, sms, phone call logs etc may be deleted. When you hit 0MB, it will start deleting things, not being able to run apps. bascially become useless as a BB.
If you try to instal an app and it says "not enough memory" then you are going to look at the app memory.
I only look at it after using app world because it eats memory, just by browsing through apps.
Also, as far as I am aware, the Bold has 128MB memory (RAM, for apps) and thats it. It cannot take memory from device memory.

So after i do a battery pull i find that i only have 27.2MB of free application memory. This kinda bothers me since i only have a few apps installed and none of them are HUGE. So i am not sure why its like that. Humm i guess i am going to have to take a day over the weekend and try and figure where all my memory is going.

So is "device memory" the location where applications are stored, and "application memory", for the applications that are being used? What about memory compression? Anyone find this feature useful? I haven't tried it yet, to see if there is a difference, although it is enabled.

Application memory where apps are stored and excuted from. Everything is stored and loaded in ram basically.

Upgrading to a higher version of the OS will generally free up a higher ## of free memory on reboot. .167 is horrid about that.
