Thumbs down Synchronizing Bold 9000 to network time

Please Login to Remove!

I am having a major challenge in synchronizing my Bold 9000 to AT&T's network time. Since I live in California, I have programmed the device to PDT but expect that it will automatically display (on the home screen) the time of the time-zone I am in. For example, I travelled to Washington DC last week and it kept displaying Pacific time.

I have rebooted the device, I have tried setting it to synchronize to Blackberry's network, I have also confirmed that other users (at work) don't have the same problem. This issue is very annoying and it creates havoc with Calendar appointments.

Thank you,

Ramesh

Sync to network time only makes sure your BB is "pulling" the time from the cell tower/network. BB, by default does NOT automatically set the time time zone. You will need to manually do that when you arrive at your destination. This is to keep your device properly in line with the BES service, which may be in a different time zone (at least that's my understanding). Since BB is/was primarily geared to BES, that requirement still exists in the BB software even if on BIS.

I frequently travel, and do this while still on the plane.

This is incorrect.
The BlackBerry will not automatically adjust the time zone setting on your device.
It receives GMT time from the network, and the time you specify on the device will offset GMT to the actual time in that zone.

When you travel to a different time zone, you need to manually select the correct time zone on the device.
When you do this, all of your calendar appointments/times will adjust accordingly.

Actually, if you go into the Clock Menu (Settings -> Options -> Date and Time), you will see the network time and network date. I have confirmed that this field updates itself automatically when I travel to a new timezone. I am puzzled on why this time cannot be displayed on the home screen - every other handset (even a low-cost handset from Samsung) updates and displays the new time automatically.

That is because these other handsets do not have Calendar entries to contend with. Or possibly they do but they may be simple entries that are not sync'd with Outlook/Notes, etc. That said, I had a PDA phone (not a BB) that did change time zones automatically and boy did it screw up my calendar big-time once I returned to my home time zone, i.e. appointments that span midnight and/or all day events.

There have been numerous threads on this topic, but I probably won't be able to convince you why a BB "can't" and an el cheapo "can". But one good example is for people that work in cities where the time zone changes when they cross a bridge. Live on one side, work on the other side. Picking up towers from the wrong side. Ugh, no thanks!

No no no.. you're misunderstanding.
The time does adjust automatically from the network.... but it's GMT time.
The TIME ZONE setting does NOT automatically change to the current time zone.
You need to manually select the TIME ZONE you're located in.
