Default Just rebooted and 11 new apps just showed up! - 04-17-2009, 02:44 PM

I installed Loopt earlier today but didn't have time to go through it, send to friends, etc (technically I'm working at the moment, lol).
I tried and it kept timing out so I did a soft reboot (alt+shift+del). When the Bold came back on I have 11 new apps!
Not sure if you can see the pic but now I have:
Brain Challenge 2
Get Mobile Banking
Make-UR-Tones
MobiTV
Music Videos
My-Cast Weather
PAC-Man
Scrabble
Tetris
WikiMobile
XM
(the last icon is Twibble, which I downloaded a few days ago)

This happen to anyone else?

Those all sound like service books that were pushed to your device by your carrier.

You can verify this by going into Options > Advanced Options > Applications. If they're not there, then they are not installed on your device.

You can go to Options > Advanced Options > Service Book. You should see them listed there. You can delete them from there. Keep in mind that when you reboot or resend service books, they will be pushed to your device again. Best bet is to hide them. Out of sight, out of mind

Yeah, I used the word installed instead of icons or service books. Not that i'm sad to see Scrabble! Feel bad that my sis just paid 10 bucks for it though (she couldn't tell I felt bad since i was laughing at her, but really..such a shame- LOL)
I wonder why they don't just send a text letting ppl know they are coming...

I don't see them, rebooted and also resent service books. Could it have something to do with the way our HQ has BES set up?

No, it's AT&T pushing them out. You have Rogers according to your profile.

It looks like the posters above are all AT&T users. Service Books are carrier specific (for the most part).

On AT&T in Indy, and I don't have any of the new apps/icons. Any idea why some have them and some don't?

I just called business care's BlackBerry helpdesk to complain, and the guy was clueless to it.

It's pretty ridiculous that I paid upwards of $450 for my Bold, and I pay almost $100/month on top of that, and they have the gall to advertise right on my home screen. I'm going to be sending them a letter to complain.

AT&T Mobility - Plan:
$39.99 - 450, 5000N/W, Unlimited M2M.
$45.00 - Unlimited BlackBerry Data, BIS, 1500 SMS/MMS.

Hey dankarlinski, when you write your letter make sure you mention that not only were they advertising on your half a grand phone (sounds even better than $500, eh?) the products they put on are at or past their demo period so you can't even try them! I loaded Scrabble and it said my demo period expired. I tried MobiTV and it said I had 5 min left from my trial period. Like, "are you kidding me?!!!"

Are these freebies, trials or apps you need to buy? I clicked on one link, got a download page but it timed out.

mgerbasio- a little of it all. wiki mobile appears to be free, mobile banking is definitely free but not all banks use it. here's a link from at&t that outlines what banks use this service - AT&T Mobile Banking | Wireless from AT&T, formerly Cingular.
most are demo's that require you to buy to use.

I just went through and hid them all - AT&T sucks for putting this crap on my phone.

Theoretical question: If I had an unbranded / unlocked phone purchased directly from BlackBerry, would AT&T have the right / ability to just download crap like this to that phone?

If you have AT&T service, they will send their service books to your device.

Did they possibly throw in a service book for visual voice mail with all this terrific crap?

Nope, still no VVM... Its not on OLAM either... Maybe ATT will adopt .266 and then throw it out there as soon as they make it official? But who knows.

Well at least your links worked. I've tried all of mine just to be curious, and NONE of them worked. I keep getting an error that states the "internet isn't available". Funny thing is I can go right to any of my browsers and connect just fine.

Oh well, thanks for the heads up that this is nothing more the a scam to get you to buy something.

Not sure that would help. I tried adding BB Maps to QuickLaunch - trying to run it from there tells me that BB Maps has been disabled. However, BB Maps will run from within WeatherBug.

Let me know how that works out for you, because I am sick of the same ŝħĩţ from AT&T! I even bought an unlocked, unbranded phone from Europa and the stupid service books are still sent.

So its the SIM card that does this? If I put in a Rogers or T-Mobile I won't get the AT&T stuff, but I'll get their networks, right? How do I prevent it, when I have an unbranded phone? How can I permanmently delete service books so it won't come back?

You get the service books from the provider that gives you service. In your case it's AT&T. There's no way to permanently delete them as they will eventually be pushed back to your device. The fact that you have an unbranded/unlocked devices means nothing.
