When I try to switch between applications I often see applications that are supposed to be closed in the menu. Is there a way to stop that from happening? Also, in the old 7290 While in the menu I could use the shortcut letter to select the application to switch to. Example, if Messages was the very last application in the menu instead of having to scroll I would just click the letter “m” and message was selected.
You will always see 5 icons in the Switch Application screen : Home, Messages, Browser, BB Messenger, and Call Log.
You can enable shortcuts by turning dial from homescreen off in Call Log > Options > General Options

Yes those 5 apps are always running.
What you want to make sure is that although web browser is running, that you have clicked menu-close, as to not leave it running on an active page! This affects battery consumption.
Why those 5 apps running constantly? I don't know. I only have 4 as i deleted BB messenger. I can only assume those are the most common apps to use and so "fully" closing them appears to RIM as a stupid idea.
