I was never lucky with mobile phones and it seems that my BOLD is continuing a tradition here. *sigh*

I have the following issues:

1) calls are dropping
2) the battery is getting extremely hot
3) the trackball is losing connectivity (mechanical i think, i can't "feel" it scrolling anymore), so that i can't scroll to the right side, only up, down, left (not always but more and more often in the past days)
4) e-mails sometimes don't arrive immediately but are pushed in stacks like 3 or 4 from my blackberry mail account

What do you guys think: do carriers replace phones under such circumstances? I'm yet extremely satisfied with my phone, even with all the problems that are appearing .

My experiences with replaced phones so far are:
- Vodafone: Nokia 7650 3 times (software), Siemens M65 2 times (water got inside but it was the OUTDOOR phone, water proof etc...not that good ;))
- T-Mobile: SE T610 (suddenly stopped working)

But they were all completely gone...so I'm not too sure about "partial" damage.

1 and 2 could probably be fixed with an OS upgrade. What OS are you running?
3) sounds like the trackball needs cleaned or replaced.
4) Resending service books may clear that up.

Wow...sounds like you are having one hell out of a time with that phone! if you have insurance, i would say go ahead and ask for a new phone from your provider.

And from all those replacement phone you are interested in, you might as well just use bold...personally i think that's the best blackberry ever made.

1) and 2): 4.0.162 (platform 4.0.0.155)

3) think so too but my warranty would be void if i'd do that myself, wouldn't it?

4) already tried, never worked, sadly. :/

and yes, i'm looking for a 1:1 replacement i wouldn't want anything but a bold...maybe a storm if they'd give it to me for free ;)

oh and about the insurance: i've bought it on the 10th of february, not even 3 months ago. i don't think that i need an insurance, eh? (hopefully, the minimum warranty for most things in the EU is 1 year, 2 years sometimes - i guess phones are covered for 1 year atm )

.162 is pretty old. I am fairly certain that the OS upgrade will correct your first 2 concerns.

No, replacing the trackball is VERY simple and will not void your warranty. Cleaning it is easy too. A lot of times when it doesn't roll in a particular direction (such as right in your case), power the device off and press on the trackball then roll it in the direction having trouble. This will clear the dust/debris under the ball. That fixes the issue most of the time.

Is it only happening with this one account?

nope, all e-mail accounts.

and the OS is the latest, according to the update checks - i just don't want to install anything but the orange version, i don't want to install anything "unapproved" by orange.

Fair enough. Keep in mind that all OS's come from RIM. There's absolutely no harm in loading an OS on your device that wasn't released by Orange.

You can call Orange and report your issues and see if they will replace the device. Chances are you will get a refurbished device and not a "new" one.

hm ok, seems that the update check isn't too reliable - thanks a ton.

i think i'll swing by the orange shop in versailles, paris on monday and see what they can offer. if they offer a new phone - fine. if they don't...well...i'll see.

thanks for all your hints guys.
