Default Help with OS Upgrade

Please Login to Remove!

I am new here, and need help. I just bought a used 9000 and am trying to upgrade the software. This device is an upgrade from an 8300.

Before buying the phone I made sure it worked and that the pin was valid, all was good. I got it home and am trying to go through the usual wipe, clean, update and refresh process I usually do, however I am having a terrible time trying to get the software updated.

I keep getting a "fatal error" when trying to update through the desktop manager. I have also tried updating through the ap-loader program outside of the desktop manager and that gives the message: "software not designed for this unit".

I have been researching and trying to get this figured out for 4 hours now and am getting very frustrated spinning in circles. First I tried to go to 4.6.0.24.7 downloaded from I don't know where and then tried the latest one downloaded directly from the rogers/blackberry download page.

I have some screenshots of my phone, but can't post them yet.

I would greatly appreciate any help I can get getting this thing to work. It's got to be something stupid... Or this is some kind of Beta setup from Rim that fell through the grape-vine and ended up in my hands. I searched the software version that is on the phone with no results:

From the "about" screen:
Blackberry 9000
smartphone (3G,wifi)
v4.6.0.32 (Platform 4.0.0.77) <-----????

I just tried it again with the latest OS from the top of the page.

Installed, deleted vendor.xml, went through loader outside of Desktop Manager again.

It reads application, reads devices, goes to the part where you check the apps.

I'm just leaving it as is to get it going for the time being.

It connects to Rom and then comes up with the error.

Any experts out there?

You already have one of the latest OS versions. Is it not working correctly or do you notice a problem?

If not why upgrade and risk the chance of messin' it up? If it isn't broken, there is no need to fix it.

Wirelessly posted (Bold)

What is the exact error you are most recently receiving? Try using JL commander to wipe the device, then install the OS (verify vendor.xml is moved/deleted).

Thanks for the replies guys.

I could not find any info on the software so could not determine if it was a beta or a released version - mind you it was stupid late and I could be a moron.

At this point I am unable to adjust the sound profiles the way I was able to on the Curve. On the Curve I was able to adjust the settings for in holster and out of holster for each profile.

On this bold I can only adjust default settings and create a custom profile limited to the same adjustments as the others.

I searched through help in the phone and it gave me the same procedures as I would do on the curve: select sound profiles, move down to advanced.... However on my phone the advanced tab is not there and I cannot bring up the menu on each profile.

Also there are no changable folder icons like there are on the Curve. These help me a lot as I use 2 or 3 Custom folders and am used to just being able to look at them to tell the difference.

I downloaded JL Commander but am afraid to go through with it to be honest because I don't know anything about it. I have wiped the phone from the handset itself, however I was afraid to do it through JL commander incase I am not able to reinstall the software as is the case right now (ending up with a bricked unit)

As said above the upgrade process begins, it connects to boot rom and uploads the ram then this error comes up.

The exact error is as follows:

In bold at the top:
"Unable to complete the loading operation"

Then it follows in plain text:
"This system software is not designed for the connected device [A0x00000043]"

And that's it show over. The phone them turns itself off and I have to manually turn it back on. Sometimes it will no turn back on and I will have to remove the battery so it will reboot.

you said the about screen shows version 4.6.0.32
personally, for a Bold, I have not heard of this version shipping with any device originally.
I think the lowest i know is .162 or possibly a .9x version.

At this point Im beginning to think your bold, is a still activated pre-production bold, which won't update.

found this:
Pre-Release Bold Firmware Help

also, googling .32 OS produces no results.

you have bought a pre-production unit and you're screwed.

Well Kudo's to the guy that I bought it from. I think he was a little shocked when I traced him down as he had called me before I bought the phone from his mother's house.

He was away camping for the weekend and I don't think she was to happy with him when I told her that he sold me a phone under false pretenses (I was told it was 2 months old and an official rogers phone, even had the rogers logo on the bottom of the case).

Anyways I got my money back from him today, and he got his phone back. It was funny watching a late 20yr old guy get driven to the bank by mommy to make sure he returned the money to me LOL! She even brought me some home made cookies for my trouble. She was a sweet old women and he wasn't too happy.

Regardless I ended up talking to Rogers over the phone and got a seemingly great deal on an upgrade to a brand new 8900. I should have just called them first...
