Just installed 4.6.0.282 -
07-13-2009, 12:38 PM
Just upgraded to 4.6.0.282 on my AT&T Bold 9000.
Time to upgrade: 22 mins
Checked the following based on the issues reported by others:
1. Overall performance: Excellent
2. Call quality: Excellent
3. Browser performance: Excellent
4. Tethering performance: Usable (AT&T)
Connects at 921.6 (377k Download, 141k Upload, 224ms Latency)
5. Battery performance: TBD
I've used BB's for years, and for me this is the best of the lineup. Screen is so sharp and bright, performance is quick, overall a real joy to use.
This firmware update seems to render picture thumbnails faster. I'll let y'all know if I find any problems. Pretty good at first blush.
Regards,
Rob

I use the 3G only with Rogers, otherwise in weak 3G signal areas (as in 28th floor office) it will go down to edge where I get gsm buzzing in my speakers, more multipath bounce on the cell phone and much less speed on data.
Lots of advantages to being on 3G. Yes the 3G setting is "3G or nothing".

I believe I am seeing a faster than normal battery drain, and I have an extended Seidio battery on my Bold. Will keep an eye on it.

Better Results with Rogers 4.6.0.282 -
07-13-2009, 09:35 PM
I just installed the Rogers 4.6.0.282 over the Vodafone version of 282 and I am seeing a big improvement in overall performance, battery life, and free memory. I don't know what Rogers may have done to their build of 282, but it seems to yield much better results on my AT&T Bold.
I know I'm not imagining this. There is a noticable difference. Even though all of this code is distributed by Blackberry, does each carrier have the option of tweaking the packages somehow? I'm curious. Something is different...

Rob

Has anyone noticed the bb losing time? Sometimes during battery pulls or scheduled power off. Whenever I boot up again it asks me to edit the time. By default I have it set to pull the timer from cell towers. Not it seems to lose (be 20minutes) behind. And recently it seems to be prompted this whenever I use quickpull.
Any ideas? Really annoying.
Love the 9000!! It's everything I wanted (minus enough ON BOARD memory)!!

I have had it be out by about 3 - 6 mins after a battery pull. even though the battery pull was less than aa minute.
not sure what causes it, but I just edit the time.

Upgrading from 4.6.0.266
Here's hoping that this battery issue people have been advising about doesn't happen.

Been running this since the post was updated.
I've had no issues. Battery life is normal, but I'm not running any applications.
I haven't read all the posts in this thread, but I think some of the battery issues are due to running data intensive apps while on 2G. This was an issue with my Pearl and the 8700 before it.

In a week post upgrading to 4.6.0.282 on my AT&T Bold 9000, here are my observations:
- 34 mins to upgrade
- Overall performance - excellent
- Battery life has increased instead decreased times reported
- no java exception errors on running minimonitor utility or any other app
- GPS - very fast acquisition of satellites
- Bluetooth - I have had issues with prior version using 2-3 Plantronics headsets, this version works brilliant and not sure why but range is over 40 feet
- Pictures seem to show faster
- Browser is faster than before
- Wi-Fi works even when I hide the SSID on my router
- No dropped calls so far
Been using Blackberry for years, I believe that this version is the best of all.
If problems show up, I will post them.

I have noticed that e-mails received are not showing up on my today screen unless I get more than one. Then the second line will show the e-mail but the first line does not.
I'm gonna try updated the home theme's version too see if that fixes. Will report later.

FWIW, I've been running this for a while now and the ONLY problem I've experienced is reduced battery life...
My Bold was getting something like 36 hours+ battery life, and now it's down to like 24+ so it doesn't really have any real-world impact on me since it's in the charger every night.
This is still miraculous to me, coming from a AT&T 8525 (HTC) that got maybe 10 hours on a lucky day, and a Treo 650 before it that got maybe 18 with the same amounts (or less) of data usage.

Trace cause of increased battery usage? -
07-22-2009, 07:28 PM
Is there anyway to trace the cause of the substantially increased battery usage in OS 4.6.0.477/4.6.0.282? There has to be a way! I don't leave anything running, no bluetooth, wifi, nothing!
I wonder if there is a way to get ahold of an issues log for BB OS's?
Let's get creative!!! Aside from this issue, this is the best OS I've had on my Bold.

Hello everyone,
can I use this on my BB in Germany?
What are the Changes to this version?
Everything that works now should work after the Update as well, right?
I currently have the 4.6.0.216 on my phone.
T-Mobile will not release a better version.
Some advice please???
Thanks
Tim

yes you can use ANY carrier OS on your phone, just follow the instructions.
Changes are whatever people say, RIM do not release "release notes" about it.

I've been trying to install .282 and I installed it last night but I go to check what version I have and it says .167. I used DM 5.0 and I downloaded the OS from the link in this thread. I uninstalled the OS from the computer and installed it again and it showed that OS 4.6.0.282 was there but when I go to upgrade DM says there is no software upgrade for this device. Can anybody help with this problem? Thanks.

yup, I removed vendor.xml file and it shows that I have .282 installed on my computer on DM. When I go to the next step it says I have nothing to update when it says I'm running .167 on my phone.

I'm using DM 4.6 and had no problem going from .167 to .266 and then to .282 don't know anything about DM 5.0 maybe someone else can give you some clues. Good luck.

Hi, I installed the .282 yesterday.
Everything went good.
The performance is better, the phone loads faster (email, Camera, internet)
but the phone hast restarted its self two times since yesterday.
Yesterday evening it was off. I had to restart. and this morning when i woke up, i had to enter my pin.
anyone else had this?
Tim

Picture thumbnails display is a huge problem in 282! i copied all images off my card. reformatted the card in BB and copied them all back (without the BBThumbs.DAT of course). let the .DAT files rebuild and everything seemed ok. but when i go into any of my picture folders the images come in at anywhere from 1/2 second to 2 seconds each! very unacceptable!!
switching 2G and 3G a nice new feature but easy to drop in to the engineering screens and do that anyway. Also battery life on this build seems HORRIBLE!!
might have to rollback in another day or so.

Sucks as I wanted to have the 2G option. Oh well.
|
i looked at engineering logs and VVM is trying to connect every 1-5 minutes and also logging some java exceptions. i assume this is the source of the battery drain. i have to look into how to remove the .COD on this build. I knew how to do it once, but forgot. if anyone has a link to instructions i'd appreciate it. thanks
